  • RSS (really simple syndication) ain't that simple

Ok, after a lot of fooling around I finally got RSS to do what I assumed it could do. Problems:

The RSS link on CNGCHAT.COM worked for one reader but not the other. Some RSS readers won't respond to the FEED at the beginning of this link. I changed it to: http://www.cngchat.com/forum/external.php?type=rss2 and now it works.

The built-in RSS reader I was using in Maxthon Browser (the one that 'worked' with 'feed') isn't very good. It kept changing items to unread when it refreshed.

I downloaded Klipfolio which is a freeware gadget suite which includes an RSS reader. Much better -- it keeps track of which items you've read and can do a popup for new items if you like. It also has a cool Ebay gadget. I like it so far.

there seems to be a significant delay between a new post appearing on the site and when it is available to the RSS feed (yes, I know it is on a timer and I allowed for that).

I have since found that some of the RSS links have both URLs but at least one (the one I found the first few times, of course) only has the 'feed' url. They should all be checked and updated as necessary...

Did someone just change it? Can't find the 'bad one' any more. Thanks.

Yes, I just saw your post and decided we should update the info on our RSS Feeds link on the sidebar.

All RSS browsers are not created equal. I use Safari and the "feed://" works just fine for me. Others might need "http://" to work.

As far as how long it takes a post to show up that's also upto your RSS browser. In Safari the default time to check for new entries is 30 minutes. Some browsers will let you go alway down to 5 minutes. For now that's OK but you do put additional load on the forum.

                John,
Have you upgraded to the latest OS yet? If so is it worth it?

Not at home yet. I may be picking it up today at Microcenter. They have a $30 mail in rebate that even adding tax is better than Amazon's price at least for the Family Pack.

I've been running it on a test system at work plus my boss has it on his old powerbook. MUCH better when connecting to a windoes network.

I think it's worth the price but make sure the first thing you do when it's loaded is to run the update. Also MAKE SURE you have a good backup of your data. There have been a few issues when upgrading so make sure you have another way of connecting to the Internet to get help.

FYI, if your running anything older then iLife 07 I'd update to iLife 08. If you have 07 i's a toss up. There are some good features but make sure the new features are something you need.

My son likes the new OS. Haven't used a Mac in decades...

More freeware RSS options for us PC neanderthals...

Attensa seems to work nicely for all versions of Outlook. It creates a folder for each RSS feed.

Google desktop has Read Feed, a gadget for RSS reading. Pretty good except that you have to click it to change feeds. It was a little hard to find in Google's gadget finder as every gadget with a single RSS feed also showed up. It also didn't tell you that some were only useable after you purchase them.

Klipfolio has the reader I like best because it can show items from multiple feeds in one window.

I've been using Macs since they first came out. If your not a heavy gamer then I suggest that people really look close at the Mac.

Leopard is having some small birthing pains but most users getting new systems won't see it and the small issues are not even close to those that Vista has/had.

If you still need to run windows then you can setup bootcamp on the mac or run Parallels or VMWare either of which allow you to run windows at the same time as the Mac's OS X.

Software? Just add it to a MyYahoo or Custom Google page. MyYahoo required the 2nd url for me.

Software is dead...just use a stable OS and focus on online services.

A little late, but Sage http://sage.mozdev.org works great for Firefox 2.0.

I'm using GNU/Linux, but it should be fine on M$ Windows or Mac OS X.
