  • MR2 Conversion

Hi, I'm new to this Forum and I would like to know how to convert my 1985 Toyota MR2 to CNG. For example, are there any "Conversion Kits" available?
Cost information would also be helpful.
    Thanks

I am also new to this forum.I spoke by phone to a vocational instructer in Oklahoma City yesterday.I gather from what he said and what I read ,the cost and complications with EPA are such, just forget it.I would like to convert my 66 Chrysler Newport but to do it legally is virtually impossible.Years ago I owned a International Scout that was fueled by Propane.Life was Not complicated by EPA at that time.

If I am correct there are no EPA standers for 1967 or older just a PCV valve and that goes back to 62 or 63. UNLESS you live in California they were using A.I.R. systems in 67. At least here in Utah anything from 68 and up has to comply from 68 to 72 the standards are not hard to reach. In 73 they started unleaded gasoline and catalytic converters. So your 66 should not be a problem the MR2 you may want to look into it.

You are almost there Rocketman. AIR pumps were required on some vehicles in 1966 (but you know CA) and Federal with the '68 model year for Federal certified vehicle (exhaust emission requirements).

I don't believe that the '66 Newport would be illegal unless it was first sold in Calif. When I get back to CA, I'll get out my old SMOG Inspection books and make a post (around the end of Oct.). I'll also try and find an old Emission Application Guide, and that should tell the tail.

On my 66 Caddy the only other piece of smog equipment is an air pump with exhaust manifold air injection.

This means it is truly a California car, we did not see A.I.R. in NY until 1973 and boy were people trying ways to by pass A.I.R. and E.G.R. back then
