  • Selling a California vehicle to someone in Europe, what do I do?

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone on the forum has experience selling vehicles that are going to be exported.

I'm selling a Harley on eBay and a guy from Germany is interested in buying the bike, riding it from California to the East Coast (3 weeks), then shipping the bike back to Germany.

Does anyone know what the process for something like this is and what taxes and fees he would have to pay to the CA DMV, if any?

The simple way would be to sell it to the gentleman from Germany just like you would sell it to your next door neighbor.

There would be a legal transfer of ownership and financial responsibility, through Calif. DMV, as is required by law. He would have to have insurance just as any other individual who would be operating the vehicle in the U.S., and you would be off the hook.

From that point it would be his problem shipping the bike to Germany and getting it legally registered in Germany. As long a you have your money and no fraud has taken place on your part -- who cares.

A bit sinical, but purchaser needs to know what is required to import the bike into Germany -- and he probably does.
