  • 62 MPG Prius Killer!!

    Ah, nothing like German engineering.
Hope they start making these in thier new Chattanooga, TN plant.
I'll bet they run great on biodiesel.

Hybrid schmybrid. Volkswagen’s rolled out a concept of its next-gen Golf outfitted with an ultra-efficient BlueMotion diesel that gets better fuel economy and emits less carbon dioxide than a Toyota Prius. The 1.6-liter common-rail turbocharged engine doesn’t offer much performance — 105 horsepower propels the car to 60 mph in 11.3 seconds and a top […]

and there are still some who doubt the guy with dark glasses just a simple diesel with a few tweaks

      Cowboy,
I would never assume to call any common rail injected engine a "simple diesel".
Not when rail pressures can exceed 25,000 psi. A "simple diesel" mechanic doesn't have to worry about having a finger or hand sheared off by a pinhole leak in the fuel system.

The accord diesel if they ever release it here in the states gets 68mpg. Curtis and reps at the LA auto show have both stated the diesel accord will be released in a acura version 1st if they release. The Super Prius is going to be released in 2010 but may be available in late 09. 90 mpg city ev mode.

one of the first things I learned about diesels was the injector would shoot fuel in to the meat on your bones and cause the meat to rot I am not going to make a fool out of myself by saying that there are no fuel rails running 25000 psi but I have not seen one most of the stuff I fool with with a commen rail runs less than 500psi my detroit 60 runs 70 psi and the over head cam pushes the injecter plunger down to create the the very high psi inside the injector and force the fuel into the chamber it was the old mack and cat motors that had the dangerous psi on the injector lines cummins and detroit have run low psi on commin rail just trying to seal a 25000 psi line is a pain in the rump I would to know if some one is running 25000 on the rail let me know cowboy

Both Duramax and common rail ('03 up) Dodge Cummins. can get near 24000 psi. The pressure relief valve on a Duramax opens at 27500 psi.

              Cowboy,
The 2.7L Mercedes in my Freightliner Sprinter had such a HP common rail.
My first job when it got here from Wyoming was to read the shop manual and find a fuel leak around the head. Pieces of cardboard, a telescoping mirror, a lot of patience and 2 hours later a loose high pressure fitting on top of an injector was the culprit.
I also learned quickly that engineering a CNG system for it was going to be a nightmare I didn't want any part of.
I here you about the simplicity of the fuel systems in my Detroit, Cummins and International engines.
I think the European trend toward high pressure piezo/hydraulic common rail injection is here to stay at least in auto and small truck diesel engines.
