  • Gas at Costco $2.44

My brother just called me and told me that gas (petrol) is down to $2.44 at the Fountain Valley, CA, Costco. I just filled up for $2.69 at the CNG station around the corner in Fountain Valley, CA. What gives?

Petrol companies always drop their prices significantly right before an election. They hope people will vote Republican thinking that the Republicans caused the price drop with their <sarcasm>brilliant</sarcasm> foreign policy and energy policy. (See, the "surge" WORKED!) The same thing happened two years ago. It'll sharply increase again right after the election to make up for a few days of lost profits.

Yea, never mind that pesky supply / demand principle.

Out here in flyover country the Marathon station across the street is $1.95 for regular. (That's right, I said $1.95) Competing brands are close to this number.

Diesel is still $3.49 or so.

My assessment - based purely on supply vs demand: Last summer's excesses incentivized a great overproduction of auto gas. Now they have to dump the excess summer inventory, switching to winter blend. The relative price strength of diesel is a better indicator of things to come.

OR - is the falling price because oil co. execs are suddenly less greedy?

It's now 10 days past the election, and I saw regular at $1.69 a few miles from home. So much for the conspiracy theory.

I suspect that last gasoline price spike has started a cng car market like never before. Why were they able to raise the price of gas the way they did? Because Americans had no alternatives. What has killed the alternatives? Low gasoline prices, of course.

I think that they are dropping gasoline prices in order to destroy alternative fuel market. They have done it before, they are doing it again. They could easily do damage by keeping gasoline prices below those of CNG for about 6 months. That has happened at the turn of the century. Last time that has happened, people were stripping all cng equipment and converting to gasoline! I've seen it before, I'm sure I'll see it again.
