GM Slates CNG Vans for Fall Delivery
General Motors will start delivering CNG-powered Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans to fleet customers this fall.
The company announced in May that it would offer a CNG van option (CalNGV News, 5.31.10). The industry commitment to expanding the CNG infrastructure in key fleet markets was a key factor in GM introducing these options now, according to Brian Small, general manager of GM’s fleet and commercial operations.
The vans are powered by GM’s Vortec 6.0L V8 engine, which was modified to improve wear resistance and durability with gaseous fuel systems. The engines are assembled into the vans at GM’s Wentzville, Missouri, plant. Productive Concepts (PCI), an alternative fuels conversion company, will integrate the CNG fuel delivery and storage system with the engine at its facility in Union City, Indiana. The vans will then be shipped directly to GM dealers or to specialty vehicle manufacturers to have commercial equipment added.

Terrific news for Natural Drive !!! Sell those babies to ALL government and county fleets (MANDATE for that matter) if they have over 100 vehicles - - - say minimum 10% MUST be clean-powered CNG vehicle. That will drive need for refueling infrastructure . . . downtown depots for city buses and city/county vehicles would be great places for new PUBLIC refueling sites for cng paid with stimulus money.

Question: will there ever be any movement to get small delivery trucks like GM Colorado or Ford Rangers or Dodge Dakotas so that all the auto part delivery stores and other delivery services would have an OEM option for CNG ??

The Ford Transit Connect small van is only comparable vehicle in that size with any momentum for moving towards CNG (either dedicated or bi-fuel).

        Thoughts ??

          Thanks all for the well-wishes.
We have EPA certs for the 08 and 09 Colorado. GM has not shown interest in this market segment yet.

Great news, John. I was wondering whether they intended to reinvent the wheel or partner on this.
