    The race between some of America's largest fleet operators to reduce their carbon emissions and fuel bills shifted up another gear this week when telecommunications giant Verizon unveiled wide-ranging new plans to cut its environmental impact. Central to the new strategy is a commitment to add about 1,600 new alternative energy vehicles to the company's fleet this year through the purchase of 1,100 hybrid and compressed natural gas-powered aerial trucks and vans, and 470 flex fuel and biodiesel powered vehicles.
    The move marks a step change in the company's green fleet policy after it doubled the number of hybrid cars in its fleet during 2008-2009 to 200 vehicles and introduced an anti-idling campaign that reportedly helped to cut fuel use by 1.7 million gallons in 2009.
