Re: CNG Prices
Actually, CNG fuel taxes are very low in California.
Sales Tax
No sales tax is due IF the fuel is sold from a compression system connected to a pipeline.
Sales tax is due when the compression system is NOT connected to a pipeline (i.e., LNG or CNG derived from LNG source).
See, http://www.boe.ca.gov/news/pdf/cardlock-selling-CNG.pdf
Fuel Use Tax
Fuel use tax on CNG is also much lower than traditional fuels. Homefueling CNG users may pay an annual permit fee of $36. Fuel purchased from a commercial station pays 7¢ per 100 cubic feet measured at standard pressure and temperature (14.73 pounds per square inch at 60 degrees Fahrenheit). See, http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub12.pdf
According to Wikipedia (read: potentially unreliable source), "One GGE of natural gas is 126.67 cubic feet." That would equate to Fuel Use Tax of about 8.87¢ per gge.
Contrast that tax rate with the 18¢ per gallon imposed on Diesel and Gasoline. See, http://www.boe.ca.gov/info/fact_sheets/diesel_fuel.htm and http://www.boe.ca.gov/info/fact_shee...r_veh_fuel.htmLast edited by Tax Counsel; 10-29-2009, 06:49 PM.

Re: CNG Prices
What cause the spike in So Cal Gas pump prices in the last week?
Does anyone have an idea what their pricing strategy is? They have large variances from station to station in the same general area.BiggJohn

Re: CNG Prices
It is the normal increase during winter. So Cal Gas price is regulated. The price will fall in summer for the regulated utility stations, and rise for C.E, because the C.E. follows gasoline price.
http://socalgas.com Go the the website , under "Regulatory" look up the ngv tarrif , and you will find the price is wholesale cost of gas + transmission charge (about $ .08 per therm, not gge) + about Compression surcharge ( about $.74 per therm) . The P.G. and E. tarrif has the compression surcharge included in the "Transmission" cost .Also ,the federal tax reduction of $.32 per gge expired,. I do not know if so cal gas was reducing the pump price , or keeping that 32 cents per gge.
