Just got my renewal notice for my '08 GX... and was surprised and dismayed that the total came to $418 (Reg fee - $56, License fee $332, County/District fee - $10, Smog Abatement Fee!! - $20). http://cngchat.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif

My 2002 Buick that I got rid of was $105 annually and my ten year-old gas sucking Land Rover is $104 annually.

I still love my GX and would make the same decision to purchase it again today.

Be sure to thank your local legislator for the increase in your vehicle license fees ("VLF"), which were recently DOUBLED in an effort to balance the budget.

The $332 VLF amount is approximately 1.3 percent of the "value" of the car based on a 10-year straight line depreciation schedule ($25,538). This amount may exceed the actual price paid because (if I recall correctly) they INCLUDE sales tax in the calcuation.

Last year, that rate was only 0.65 percent, which you paid when you bought the car.

Talk about having things in reverse order! This is just one more reason why people will NOT buy replacement cars that lower smog and of course carbon, plus all of the other benefits of decreasing our reliance on traditional gas guzzling cars.

The State of California's legislature is not thinking right.

This can be another tool to pressure drivers to get out of high carbon footprint vehicles. Instead, we are punished.

I just got my renewal notice for my '08 GX. It is $335. I live in Alameda County, if that accounts for the difference.

Since it's a CA state lic fee... They get you in whichever county you're in.

it looks like youall out there a getting (you pick the word so I dont get in do do) as to tag fees like they are crazy I have not bought a tag for a car in years as I own dealership and keep a d tag for myself to ride on but but my dump truck costs me 128 a year for 26000 lbs and my duely costs me 80 or 90 I think with a heavy tag to pull my goose neck 16000 lbs I know not more than 100 I havent bought that one since last year I think a reguler car tag is 23 dollers sounds like you all need to clean you guns and march on sacramento (I think that is your state craptol )and throw the rascals out and ask just wherein the ( again you pick the word) your money is as I keep reading your goverment is broke to piss that kind of money away someone is stealing

That's why I placed the word "value" in quotes. The VLF is based on the purchase price for the first year. For subsequent years, the "value" on which the VLF is calculated is that original purchase price reduced by 10% annually until it bottoms out 10% (at 10 years old). In property tax assessment terms, that would be considered the "minimum percent good."

When enacted, the VLF was considered an in lieu fee replacing locally-assessed property taxes on autos.

Hey, when the state needs the money they are going to get it anywhere they can. If they can't raise taxes, they can always (and quickly) raise fees. Government never heard about reducing their budgets or reducing the size and number of usless departments when times are tough. They govern by fear and reduce the headcount in places like police, fire and education first--never the fifteenth guy in the permit department that has been hasseling you for six months while you try to get a permit to paint your house. In Michigan, your license plate fee is based on the new price of the car---and it never goes down regardless of age ! So, I just register my vehicles in a state where I have an alternate residence--I am not going to be held up if I can avoid it. I just re-registered 3 cars and 4 motorcycles for two years for $467.00--and it sure wasn't in Michigan. I just hope other states don't start looking at the California "model" .

If you were refering to my post about Michigan fees, No, the fee never changes regardless of selling price. The selling price dictates the taxable amount, however the license plate fee comes from a book that shows the original sticker price--and that is cast in stone. Fortunately for the GX, because they are not sold in Michigan, it isn't listed in their book and when asked which model it was I just pointed to the cheapest one on the page . Hey, they write the laws and the people they represent never question their actions. BTW the GX joined the out of state registered fleet!
