  • How many miles after bars go away?

There was a recent post on how many miles you get after fuel light goes on. My light goes on when there are a few bars left. How many miles can I expect after ALL BARS DISAPPEAR? I had this issue come up when I got to a station in Irvine and it was closed. I had to drive to the station in Santa Ana. I got 18 miles total with no bars before I refueled. What is the experience of others out there?

I don't know if there is an industry standard, but every car I have driven goes at least 30 miles after the light goes on.

You manual states that once the low fuel light comes on you have 20mi city/30 hiway... roughly. It will vary by year.

Wow, great question. Yes, I’m embarrassed to say that I ran out of bars just the other day. I went another 8 miles before I made the next station. This was 21 miles after the light came on. What is it Aerosmith sings? “Livin’ on the Edge”

thanks for this discussion re:mileage after no bars. Yep, here where we are we only have 2 public stations (don't have a phil in our garage) so we are at the mercy of one or both operational. When both are down, we pray!

Curtis, this is Bill Marsh, i spoke with Greg this evening and he told me you might be able to "hook me up".....we're without bars and have been to both locations the last couple days since Sunday. Please help. Thanks, can we come tomorrow? When is a good time, hoping the car will make it to your place?!

I have gone 23 miles. My fuel light usually lights up around 170 miles, and about 150 if I fill at 90 degrees+ at my local station 3600-3700psi. Mostly highway 75-80mph. If I top off, I can go farther, farthest traveled is 212, hit the light at 207. That was Hemet to Lancaster and back to Anaheim.

Hi, Bill. Yep, both of the AV stations are on the fritz. I have been taking care of emergency fuel for all you locals since Saturday. Hopefully Lancaster will be up very soon. In the mean time... if you can get here I'll help you out.

They're going to be starting (re)construction soon and I should be open to the public no later than January.

Re: How many miles after bars go away?

This is an excellent question! I am tempted to run my car out of CNG to find out the answer. I have a 2006 GX and I mostly drive highway miles at 75-80mpg with the cruise control. My reserve light comes on at 2 bars-ish. I recently drove 700 miles in one day and kept records of when each bar went out. Plotting this I found that the bars disappear about every 13 miles. I only ever have 19 bars after a Phill so this works out to 247 miles. On this 700 mile expedition I went 215 miles and had two bars left. Another time I went 214 miles and had one bar left. Has anyone figured out if the bars are linear?

                      question: dry tank

We now have 5 GX's in our organization and I am considering a 15' hose with each end having a Parker 3600 psi CNG P36 quick disconnect. When connected to two cars the tanks should then equalize, right?

Re: How many miles after bars go away?

I've been 20 miles w/no bars once. But the other day the whole fuel gauge started flashing after 15 miles of no bars. I had never seen that before. That must mean it's getting seriously low! It was only a mile after that before I made the fill station. Has anybody else got "flashed" before? I wonder how far you can go after that.

flashing guage indicates an open fuel door. On some 2006-8 models there was an issue with a malfunctioning switch in the door that reads the door position. Sometimes just open and close it will resolve the problem. If not, you may need to make a visit to your dealer and have it checked out.

I think he is refering to the yellow "dot" next to the "E" indicator on the gauge. The owners manual says that when this yellow "dot' comes on there are approximately 20-25 miles city and 25-30 highway miles left . I think that it operates after all the "bars" are gone. This "dot" is also seen for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition. However, temperature will affect the range and maybe that is why it flashed sooner.
