  • So is Honda making money on the GX?

Does anyone know if Honda is actually making a profit producing and selling the GX? I hope they are, as no other manufacturer has stepped up and started producing CNG powered vehicles for the consumer market.

I really don't know. I would say that it's probably not one of their more profitable models and I hope that they're at least breaking even on it. It would seem that the more units they produce the greater the chances of some profitability.

At the rate of climbing demand, and the fact that they allowed another (roughly) 300 additional cars for the 2008 run, shows that the head office clearly supports the car.

Any idea if cars are being allocated/shipped to Utah yet with Honda's blessing?

Although Utah is not yet approved for retail sales, there seems to be a whole bunch of "Fleet's of One" being delivered under the blind eye of the powers that be... blessings would be a little too loose a term to apply here. I believe that Utah will be the next public retail state approved.

In fact, the majority of the country is selling "fleet's of one". I always played by the rules when I was doing the GX's back in the early days. I started with them back in '98.

For now only for fleets in Utah.
The recent AP news story had the following to say about it, however:

Utah has caught the attention of Honda, which can't make CNG-equipped Civic GXs fast enough at an Ohio plant. For now, it makes the compact available for sale to individuals only in California and New York, but executives say Utah could be next on their list.

Could a person who lives in Ohio "purchase" a new GX from a CA dealer and take delivery at the Honda plant in East Liberty?

Short answer... No. You used too be able to do that with American cars, but Honda has no contingency to do that. You can buy out of state and have it transported. Google "Vehicle Transport Companies" and you can get online bids. Otherwise, identify the fleet dealers in your area and try to buy from them directly.

The CNG option on the Hyundai Accent is $1325 in India.
A typical CNG conversion in Brazil costs $2000.
A European Ford Focus has a CNG option price of 3275 Euro.

                Yes. Honda is making money.
