  • Birmingham to Nashville round-trip

Recently I had an additional tank (4.2 gge) added to my 09 GX by Phoenix Energy in B'ham. Now that I have 12.2 gge capacity, I can travel further between fill-ups. Currently B'ham has only have 1 public cng pump ($1.37). Hopefully another pump is coming to the metro area soon.

Yesterday I drove to Nashville and back--total mileage was 364 miles. I still had 5 bars left on my fuel gauge at fill-up. It took 8.1 gge to fill at 4000 psi. This gave me 45 mpg. I was more than pleased w/45 mpg, considering my wife and 3 children were with me. Driving conditions were: 68-69 mpg cruise control, 95% of miles were interstate, a few steep grades to pull, ran the AC entire trip, 2 adults/3 children, approx weight-700 lbs for family and 100 lbs for addition tank/brackets. Tight as sardines but we survived. Lots of real bonding-time.

Based on my calculations, I believe I have a range of 425-450 miles for road trips, with of course excellent fill psi.

My normal avg is 35-37 mpg for all of my driving. My avg range per fill is now 360 miles. As you can imagine I have very little trunk space with the additional tank, but am willing to make the sacrafices. I am in the process of having stronger springs added to the rear suspension.

Thanks for the info, Chris. What did the additional tanks cost you to have installed?

Phoenix does good work and are very safety concious. Met the guys a few months ago and would recommend them for any CNG work

The cost was $1200. The type II tank had been in their inventory for some time, but had never been used. The expiration date on the tank is 2020.

Steve and Norman at Phoenix Energy have been very helpful with all of my questions and concerns even before I made the decision to enter the CNG world. I recommend them for your cng needs.
