  • SLC to LA and Back!

    We took an amazing three day adventure and drove one natural gas civic to LA and bought 3 while we were there! We were able to drive them all home safely in a CNG Civic Caravan! We made fueling stops in Springville, Fillmore, Cedar City, St George, Las Vegas, Barstow, and Victorville.

    Las Vegas to Barstow is a stretch but easily doable. Just make sure you get a decent fill with the 3600 PSI in Las Vegas and you should have no problems!

    On our way home we were able to get a good fill in Las Vegas, after fueling each car twice and dealing with a police officer who believed we were "stealing" gas, because we were not Haycock Petroleum employees. This officer however, must not understand that the gas is actually compressed natural gas. Meaning, we would need huge pressurized takes to successfully pull that off! He also couldn't understand how we had a Haycock Petroleum Card in the first place. We explained its a prepaid gas card and we are allowed to fill there. He reluctantly accepted our explanation wondering if that was the case for all of the Haycock locations. (I am sure we did look a little suspicious with 3 newly bought white 98 civics with no plates!) So, don't worry its perfectly legal to fill with the Haycock cards, don't let any officer who doesn't understand CNG Cars tell you otherwise.

    We knew we would need to get a good fill in Vegas because the St. George station closes at 8pm and we were in Vegas at that time. We drove fairly slow and were able to roll into Cedar City with our gaslights on. This, I would not recommend. Time your trip to make the 8pm St George cut off, we wish we had. Luckily we were able to fill in Cedar City and get home safely from there!

    Cheers!

    Here's an update on the Fillmore, Utah station on this route:

    Last night I visited the Fillmore, Utah Chevron station to fill up for my trip home to SLC. Although it was only 6:30 PM the attendant was turning off the lights and locking the door. Luckily she was kind enough to stay a few minutes and allow me to fill up. I asked her if they were closing early due to Christmas and she told me that they will close early when business is to slow on any night.
    So you may want to call ahead or plan to get there early if you plan to fill up there.

      I'll be flying down to LA next week to pick up a new '08. The Vegas stations take CFN cards, don't they?

      I'm asking as many people as I can think of. If more than 2/3 of them say "no problem" I'll take my chances. Otherwise, I'd better order a pre-paid card.

        CFN seems to be OK based on Haycock's web site:

        {edited to add}
        But I called Haycock and they told me the CFN card cannot be used for natural gas. Only their Haycock card will work.

        I will be in Vegas next week for the AFVi show.

        You are welcome to swing by the Rio to borrow my card if you find the CFN card is not working. Otherwise, if you are coming in town during business hours you could go to the Haycock office to get a prepaid Haycock card in case the CFN card won't work.

        Please update the Vegas thread with your experience:

        Also, you should call Haycock to see which stations are working. A few weeks ago the 3333 Losee Rd. station was under repair.

          How exactly does the Haycock "prepaid" card work? Is it disposable?

            They open an account for you and issue the cards. Again, I highly recommend two cards in case you have trouble with the mag stripe and find yourself stuck. Anyway, they also mail you monthly statements showing fuel dispensed and your current credit balance. If you find you don't need the account anymore you need to contact Haycock to get it canceled and any balance refunded.
