  • Utah State requesting Tax Credit documentation

I just received a letter today from the state of Utah investigating my $2500 tax credit i took in 2007. What prompts these checks? Don't they have access to those that have submitted the paper work? I have my signed TC-40V form, and the vehicle information they are requesting, but why? I'm a little curious about this inquiry...

Re: Utah State requesting Tax Credit documentation

Tax Audits, both Federal and State usually are about 2 years after a return is filed. (2007 return filed in 2008 + 2 years) It takes them about that long to get to all the returns with red flags . The bad thing is, this way , when they dis-allow a deduction or credit , 2 or more years of penalties and interest accrue . States are strapped for money so they are looking at anything that is unusual. Don't worry as long as you have the documentation to back up thr deduction or credit.

I got one last month as well. They were looking for the same docs we had to send to the deq. Govt agencies dont communicate very well among themselves- a case of cya.

I've had something similar as well. It is just a little Quality Assurance, not a formal audit. I called the number listed and they explained exactly what to send in (which was not as extensive as the letter stated) and a few weeks later they sent a letter saying thanks everything is good. Good Luck

Re: Utah State requesting Tax Credit documentation

Help. I purchased two CNG autos. A Cav in 2007 and (dam it) a contour in 2008. I submitted the Utah Forms to the Utah Division of Air Quality in late spring of 2008. I verified that both cars were eligible for the state credits. I did not receive a response or any correspondence from the Air Quality office. But, I claimed the credits on my State Income Tax return anyway! Now the tax commission is requesting the documents.

Anybody else find themselves in this silly/dumb position? Any ideas on how to correct this situation?

Might want to just call DAQ to see if the form is still at their office.

Re: Utah State requesting Tax Credit documentation

              Hi all,

I just got my letter yesterday and it would amaze me if the state could find their behind with both hands and a mirror.
Glad to hear they don't want everything in the letter since I no longer own the car, but I do still have the DEQ document. The strange thing is they are only interested in my carry-over amount from the previous year and not the original filing for the tax credit.
Have a call in to the Auditor and hopefully can clear it up with minimal hassle.

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread since I've been curious about getting audited on this credit as well. I did my taxes with Turbo Tax the year I did my CNG vehicle credit. I guess we'll see what happens.
