For diesels to run on just CNG they need a spark, which makes the conversion not possible to conventional diesel autos and trucks. I have read about some conversions that run 20%/80% diesel/CNG on conventional diesel engines. There are some posts/links somewhere on this forum.
Also there are propane conversions that may be more economical, anyway you look at it you will still have to burn diesel.

Questions from the new guy

Hey there guys and gals.
I am new to this sight but have a few questions. I run a 1997 Dodge cummins to Blackfoot, ID from SLC, UT 5 nights a week. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to convert it to CNG and if so where can I have it done. Also what would this cost? I know that a new CNG 5.9 cummins motor runs around 2000.00 dollars but I need to know what it would cost after being installed and having tanks ect put in. What kind of price am I looking at and where can I have this done? I am tired of paying 4.30 a gallon.

It's very obvious that CE is trying to break Trilliums back. Hopefully it won't work and will backfire on CE. I'd love to see them kicked in the but for predatory pricing.

T Boones pumps are 2.85, except for the GG station cuz Trillium opened up their station a stone throw away with 2.42 fuel. CE rsponded with 2.299, then Trillium came back at 2.199, now the GG station is 2.049, next move Trillium!

You're talking about Utah, right? The original poster is from CA, hence the "Communist".

Correct. When I looked at the orig posting, after I pushed submit, I got that.

However, one major part of Com and Social ism is price fixing and good or bad we have price fixed CNG in UT.

Yroc, the 50 cent credit sunsets in 2010. If congress does not renew it before then we will be paying 32 cents more, not 50 cents because the statue included collecting 18 cents per gge in road excise tax which was not being collected before.

Timon, the UT lanes require a special Clean Fuels license plate to ride solo. It has a blue C emblem which you can see on my car as it is being fueled at home on the welcome page at CNGchat (click on the tiny little Home icon in the upper right of any page). Conversely, I bumped into a CHIP officer at a restaurant when I was in San Diego the other day and asked him what he would do if I drove my Utah natural gas vehicle solo in your HOV lanes. He said he would pull me over, but if I had some documentation about the state law providing solo access to my type of vehicle he would probably just let me go.

Anyone know how long the rebate on natural gas will last? I guess when it's gone, we will be paying $.50 more per gallon?, so $1.14. Is that right?

John,

Just wondering, if for some reason someone from another state with HOV stickers was up in UT on vacation or something will UT allow them to use the HOV lanes?

I'm not sure what the policy is for CA and AZ but it's something I think we should find out and post so those that travel will know what they can and can't do.

thanks, i stopped by the dmv and they confirmed what you said. i still have to pay $15+$82 annually so i'm a bit hesitant. i have to decide if the hov lane is worth it.

I contacted Gordon Larsen at Questar and ask him why CNG prices were so cheap. His reply:
There are multiple reasons why we are the cheapest. 1 we are the only utility in the country that owns its own wells and pipelines so it eliminates some middle men. 2 we decided to keep it in the utility rather than put it out with private industry which typically want to be 40 to 50 cents under gasoline. Utilities run on a lower margine. 3 we decided to pass on all of the excise tax credit to consumer rather than keep all or some of it. We have been between 58 cents and 1.23 since. 1988.

He also indicated that CNG prices would remain pretty stable at the current price. I read an article that predicted gas prices to go up $1/g each year for the next couple of years.

Tom,
You just need the Clean Air license plate on your vehicle (it has the blue C dot on it). This gives you the carpool lane access and free SLC downtown parking. Go to any DMV office with your paperwork (and old license plate removed if applicable) and they will give you one on the spot.

when i bought my '08 GX from ken garff, ron told me i could drive the hov lane and park free downtown. but your post says i need a certificate? could you clarify this?
