  • New Emission Testing Procedures in Utah County

The shop that does Emission Inspections for me has recently changed their procedures for testing bi-fuel vehicles.

They used to hook up to the OBDII port and it told them whether to pass or fail the vehicle. That had been a particular headache because of sensors not being in a ready state.

Now they hook up to the OBDII port and instead of reading the codes they put in a bypass code and do a tailpipe test on BOTH fuels.

I read the bulletin from Environmental Quality and it basically says that there was a problem with the converted systems sending bogus signals to trick the sensors so they have now decided to test the emissions and make sure they meet the standards on both fuels.

The shop owner said that they don't look at whether it is an EPA approved system or not. They just check for the emissions. Seems to me that it is a loosening of the EPA influence in the testing.
