  • CNG Trailer??

    Hi Everyone!
I have been sent to this forum to try to find the person who has the CNG trailer in Clearfield or Layton UT?? The person who told me about it did not have any contact info for them and sent me to this forum.
I need to make a run to San Jose and there is not CNG across northern nevada... need a bigger supply tank!

If anyone has the contact info or if YOU are the one with this trailer i have heard of please contact me through this forum.

For general info I have a GREAT dodge 15-Pass with all the goodies! I use it in my computer recycling biz (which probably would be dead at $4/gal for gas... PRAISE to the $.64 CNG for saving my business!!

    THANKS ALL!!

    Re: CNG Trailer??

I'm sorry this wont help you in Utah, but I did see a CNG trailer one day at the Placentia yard. He worked for a trash company, probably Waste Management.
The other option is to head south thru Barstow, then west.

How would one connect a cng trailer into the vehicle's fuel system?

      Couplers with a flex-hose?

I must admit it is a pretty cool concept to extend range, but I assume these trailers/tenders are all custom built, no?

Basically it's like a mobile fueling station. The guy filled it like you fill your NGV. It must have a fueling nozzle for filling the trucks.

To be legal it would have to be built with DOT cylinders Not NGV cylinders. 2 totally separate parts of DOT for the different cylinders. You would use it as a portable fueling station. SCI and Dynatec both make composite DOT cylinders. of corse there are the licensing and state hazardous materials regulations

            Re: CNG Trailer??

I have seen this van/trailer filling up at the Clearfield station. It is a Ford van with a tandem axle covered trailer. He has a flexible hose that connects the van to the trailer. If I see him again, I will direct him here.

It would have to placarded so you would need a commercial drivers license with a hazmat endorsement to pull it on the highway.

I saw the van and trailer at the Ogden 21st station, the plate were from Idaho. Some kind of airport shuttle service.

The problem with that much capacity is that it takes 45 minutes to fill and then the next guy has no pressure. Been there and done that with that Idaho van. If you fill that much please fill early in the morning or late at night so the majority of us that fuel personel cars can get good pressure and not sit and wait.

                    Re: CNG Trailer??

If it's "legal enough" for the airport shuttle to drive on road, then same should apply to rest of cng users. I think this is great way for cng vehicles to get more driving range for particular trips where public cng refueling sites are non-existent. If such a trailer would be available for cng users on a per rental basis, then that would be a great resource . . . akin to lifesaver service from AAA for cng cars that ran out of fuel.

For me personally, I sure wouldn't want full-time connection to trailer for the cng fuel with a flex hose. Instead, I would have refuel quick connects where trailer would connect to vehicle just like fast-fill. Thus, would ONLY fill up car with cng fuel from trailer while stopped!!

caveat emptor... it doesn't seem to have any placard on the trailer that would lead me to believe this is a legal setup

                          Re: CNG Trailer??

Looks illegal to me as well, especially since it does not have hazmat placards (hard to imagine a hazmat passenger vehicle) and is connected during vehicle operation. It also looks like the fill port is on the trailer frame. Hopefully a business in the Utah CNG community did not make this setup for the individual. Imagine if the trailer became detached or involved in an accident! This would be a bad day for Utah CNG owners/operators.

I would have no concerns if (1) the trailer tanks were not connected to the vehicle during operation (2) the trailer was properly labeled (CNG/flammable gas/etc) so that emergency personnel know what they are dealing with (3) DOT approved mounting brackets were used and the trailer was appropriately balanced (appears like a lot of tongue weight with the tanks current location).

                            Re: CNG Trailer??

I had thought about the possibility of building a CNG trailer, but only for the purpose of a fill buffer at home. If it has wheels, it should be exempt from the 'no storage at home' problem.

I had toyed around with the idea of adding CNG Tanks to a boat trailer (an extended one, originally designed to hold PWC's in front of the boat), so I could actually get some range in my bi-fuel when towing, but decided it wasn't going to be worth it for how often I'd use it.

Living in No. UT and knowing how few stations there are in ID, I will only commend this individual for having a solution for his lack of fueling stations in his state.
