  • WARNING: SLC buyers beware!!!

I recently had the displeasure of dealing Auto Excellence, one of the only dealerships in Utah who sells used CNG vehicles. If you are planning on buying a car from them make sure you plan on leaving the lot with, when you show up. I was trying to buy a Honda Civic GX from them and went up to test drive it. They said they were going to send it to the shop to pull out the extra tank, the previous owner had installed, and would call me when it was out of hte shop a couple days later. I called my broker and had the money transfered to my checking account so I would be ready to move when they called. A couple days later I swung by and they had sold it. They said they had a nother one coming in from PA, and again said they would call me and promised they would give me first shot at it. I was following up with them a couple days later and they had sold it witout even calling me again, so much for keeping their promises.

To be fair, I do understand that the Utah market for these is extremely hot right now and I'm sure many people say they want to buy and then can't get financing or flake out. Still, keeping a promise to call and give someone first shot at a car, isn't hard to do. Failing to do so, only shows a lack of dedication to your customers. I was waiting for the call so I could get an amount to have a cashiers check made out to them, I told them this and they still failed to follow up on a promise that not just one sales person, but all three, Levi, Blaine and Marty, knew about.

So, if you're in the market, for a CNG car in Utah, and being treated like the 10K+ you're going to spend, on one of these vehicles, is worthy of something resembling customer service is important to you I would personally recommend that you try to buy somewhere that understands what the term means.

That being said, I know of a great looking Blue Honda Civic GX that is for sale, out in Tooele for 15K, because I just bought it's twin. Look for it on Craigslist. The guy who's selling it will at least keep the promises he makes.

**I don't mean this as a personal attack on these guys, but I'm admittedly very frustrated with their willingness to keep promises they make. Taking care of your customers when you're busy is critical, because they are the people who will keep you going when it's slow. I also want to warn other potential customers what they can expect when they deal with these guys.**

yeah, that sucks, but you are right about the crazy market here. I just sold a contour and had 5 promises to buy within a couple hours of listing it. I tried to keep eveyone in order and held it for the first guy who 'promised to buy it' He never got back with me, I assume he could not get financing. Then I called people back and had to leave many messages. I really wanted to be fair, but just starting saying, first one with the money gets it. I couldn't keep things straight. I wish I had 5 of them to sell, but then don't we all wish there were enough CNG's for eveyone in Utah!!

        Re: WARNING: SLC buyers beware!!!

I bought a 99 Contour from AutoExcellence after spending many attempts trying to get just an okay deal from them and many many utah cng dealers, and more than one outside of utah. I had a dealer in CA promise me on the phone on a sunday night to process paperwork for my purchase the next morning. I offered him my credit card, whatever i could to get him to secure the vehicle, he refused and promised me all was fine, tomorrow it would all be taken care of. He sold it the next day, probably to some other dealer who immediately posted it on ksl.com

One thing I learned was that if you want a cng car in utah, you have to be either uncaring about the price you pay (I wasn't, i refused to pay much more than the 3K utah tax credit premium), or you have to be in the right place at the right time with check in hand (luckily i was with AutoExcellence).

I just happened to be on their lot when a truck pulled up and unloaded a dirty contour with low miles. I had a check and he sold it to me for what i think was a reasonable price (well, well, well under 10K). I am sure he screwed over someone for selling me that contour, his wall was full of numbers for people he was supposed to call. I think the secondary auto market is one of opportunity, a bird in hand type thing. I was a buyer with a check, as simple as that.

Even though I understand the whole supply and demand thing here in Utah, CNG is still simply a cost-benefit analysis to me. I refuse to be gouged by a reseller just because there are 10 buyers for every vehicle in Utah. Unfortunately, not everyone else feels the same way. I regularly watch 8 and 9 year old contours, cavaliers and f150s going for 7-10K over a similar gasoline vehicle on kelley blue book. I think paying that much for a cng car is crazy. It makes poor financial sense to me, the payback on such a premium even at today's prices is measured in many years.

I am still looking for a cng van to replace our gas van. I am not very optimistic at all of finding one. Instead I am starting to look into buying a newer gas one at a discount, because gas guzzlers are much cheaper these days, and then converting at snow motion.

          Re: WARNING: SLC buyers beware!!!

I would not be too hard on the sellers. I get people all day long that say they want to purchase a car or truck and then they never show up. We get stood up all the time. I have never had a buyer call me to tell me that they bought another car and to not hold the car for them any longer. The sellers are probably getting 20 plus calls a day on the vehicle and it is hard to keep that kind of volume straight. I would say cut them some slack. Money in the hand talks much louder than a promise on the phone.

            Ouch.

Wow, spoken just like a true used car salesmen or a CE exec.
What was Robnholly thinking? Expecting integrity from a used car salesman, what rock have they been living under.
Don't they read this forum, "Gas War Profiteering" is the order of the day, especially in Utah.

I am thinking the idea of a deposit and waiting list based on deposit might sort this out for anyone doing any kind of volume. It's not rocket science to make sure people in line who have spent time with a dealer should be able to put up some money to be first in line to insure bith parties interests.

I certainly understand this point, but I had the money and was simply waiting to be told what amount ot put on the check to bring them. So I had the money in hand. Walking around with 10-15K in cash isn't the smartest thing to do. If you can't handle getting 20 calls a day on a vehicle, then you don't have a good sales database in place. I really can't be more clear about my purchasing intentionas than saying "Call me when the car comes in and tell me the amount so I can go get a check." There is no excuse for poor customer service. It's just poor customer service. As I said, with the demand increasing there will be more people joining the fray, so to speak, and very quickly they will be replaced by people who actually follow up on their promises. Their complete lack of organization will only hasten the stampede of customers to dealers who, at least superficially, show that they care about the money the customer is spending with them.

I'm pretty hot about it, but I don't like being lied to. If I treated my customers this way, they would go somewhere else or do without.

Next time, 'get it in writing.' Have them take a deposit and give you a receipt. Then you'll have some basis to complain if they sell it to someone else.

Yeah, I had nothing but attitude from Auto Crapcellence when searching Utah for a car via Ebay--guy I emailed and got a message from was completely rude and I wouldn't be surprised if his place goes under, with the way he treats customers. So now I'm strictly dealing with CNG Utah-Derek because even though he's a bit hard to get in touch with, is a really nice dude and is going the extra mile for me on my bi-fuel Crown Vic Interceptor. We will probably be getting my wife's CNG vehicle from CNG Utah as well--looks like Auto Crapcellence really dropped the ball in the service department.

You're right on all counts. I have a first come-first serve policy and a list of people that want to be called. I believe in integrity. It's the backbone of any business.

There's an old addage in sales (in general); a happy customer will tell 3 people... an unhappy one will tell 10... unless you reside on cngchat... then the numbers tend to be a bit higher.

This is what I expected. Simply to be treated with integrity. I'll tell everyone I know not to use them now and I won't darken their door with my business again. It may be a little bit more difficult to find a CNG vehicle than to just go to a dealership 30 miles away, but it took me all of a couple days to find a car I wanted and buy it by just searching through the classified adds.
