  • Applied for Carpool stickers

    *** Updated July 11, 2009 ***
Received the stickers in the mail today!
    6/23/2009 - mailed the application
    7/11/2009 - received stickers

Total elapsed time was 18 days. Not bad at all considering weekends, 4th of July holiday, and state office "furlough" days imposed by Schwarzenegger.

The actual "date issued" shown on the paperwork is 6/26/2009. Looks like they processed the application immediately. The longest part is their process to get everything in the envelope and mail it back (postmark is 7/09)
    ***** ***** ***** *****

    The waiting process now starts.

    2004 F150, dedicated CNG.

I made a good "catch" when buying the vehicle. The dealer did not know about Motive Power = "N" until I told him about it. I watched him write it in on his form, and he even noted "natural gas" in the margin above the MP box.

Two weeks (to the day) later I received the plates and registration card in the mail. The registration card was correct, MP = "N".

Yesterday, June 23, 2009 I mailed in DMV Reg 1000 Application for Clean Air Stickers. We'll see what happens and how long it takes from here.

Given what I've read on this forum about the SPU (Special Processing Unit) at the DMV rejecting applications, I attached the following cover sheet to my application. Possibly overkill, but I figure it *should* get their attention.

7 days! Wow, you really lucked out. I submitted my application 5 weeks ago and am still waiting for them to cash my check -- hasn't even started the processing period. I had to have CaptJeff put in a word for me. I might have to send another application in....

          Re: Applied for Carpool stickers

I'm wondering if there is any correlation between vehicle type and processing time?

I also wonder if previous registration plays into it at all. In my case, I was buying an 2004 F150 CNG which had been in a dealer's inventory for a couple years. I have no idea how it was registered previously, but it didn't have any stickers on it (no idea if stickers were ever issued, but I don't think so because it was probably part of a fleet). Anyway, I made sure they indicated MP = N, but I have to wonder if it was previously registered as "G" if this will send up a red flag and cause longer processing.

I guess we'll see. I'm only 2 days into the waiting.

CaptJeff guided me through the entire process. If your application ends up on the wrong desk... Most DMV staffers think we're applying for yellow tags.

Check over your paperwork to make sure there are no mistakes or issues that might create questions in the minds of the DMV staff. I'd try following up with a letter. PM me for the contact CaptJeff directed me to.

lol. Especially when you are doing it in a real driving lane (as opposed to the shoulder) with four wheels and A/C!

                  Glad it worked for you.

Bought the GX on 5/29 and the dealer submitted the paperwork. Still don't have the stickers. Have a title (with plate numbers on it), but no plates.

                    Re: Applied for Carpool stickers

it took about 2 months, but I finally received my stickers yesterday. Thanks to the assistance of CaptJeff, thanks again CaptJeff! The instructions from the DMV say to add all 3 stickers to the rear bumper. However, I've seen some of these stickers placed on the rear fenders as well. I'm hesitant to add them anywhere else on the car other than were the DMV has indicated. I could see it being a benefit to add them to the lower fenders, just in case I'm ever in a fender bender and have to get the bumper replaced -- no need to wait for the replacements. When I bought the car, the dealer told me to slice the stickers before placing them on the car to deter anyone from stealing them as it would destroy the stickers. Although the paperwork that came with the stickers says not to try to move them once they've been placed on the car as it would destroy them.

                    So:
Should I add them on the bumper?
                    On the lower fenders?
And, should I slice them as suggested?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

                    Thanks.

                      Re: Applied for Carpool stickers

I applied mine to the rear quarter panels above the bumpers and on the (rear) trunk lid.
DONT slice them, they will not be re-usable after being removed. When you apply them, make sure you do not have any soap residue, because I believe it activates the "VOID" markings on the stickers.

Same as JJ. When you get those bumper scratches you will not have to get new stickers when you paint. Also, it looks a lot better higher up on the metal.

Thanks, JJ & Scott! I will attach the stickers as suggested.

                            Re: Applied for Carpool stickers

When I got my stickers, the state supplied a diagram (which was printed on an envelope for some reason).

It was pretty clear from the diagram (and from observing everyone else's interpretation of the diagram on the road) that they want:

-- The 2 larger stickers low on the left and right rear quarter panels
--The 1 smaller sticker on the right hand side of the flat, rear facing surface of the rear bumper.

I thought about placing the 2 larger stickers on the portion of my rear bumper that wraps around the quarter panel (F150 truck), but that section wasn't really large enough to accommodate the sticker. As well, I figure the sticker should be AS VISIBLE AS POSSIBLE to the CHP who will lurk at a 45 degree angle behind you and to your right while they are trying to figure out whether to pull you over for riding solo in the HOV lane or not.

Hi, I came across this thread searching for a way to check that status of my HOV sticker application. I purchased a used 2003 Ford F150 dedicated CNG. I submitted the sticker application on Dec 28 2010, it's now Feb 14 2011 (about 48 days) does the process take this long? Should I resubmit my application? The check for the applicaiton fee has not been cashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

                              thanks,
                              Doug
