  • How do I refill CNG in Massachusetts if I don't have a credit card?

I am planning on purchasing a Honda Civic GX

My main concern is that we plan to commute frequently between NYC and Boston Area.

New York? No problem, we've got a BP station that acepts cash. Halfway in Hartford, CT? No problem, a shell station that accepts cash (both are 24 hours)

I have debit cards also if needed.

BUT in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, EVERYTHING is by the company AVSG That says on the government alternative locator website: "24 hours daily, debit cards not accepted" AND Payment Methods: "MasterCard VISA WrightExpress PHH Services "

So my MasterCard is a debit from my bank, which I suppose I can't use anywhere in Massachusetts for CNG? And it seems no one takes cash.

WrightExpress and PHH seems like some corporate / fleet card only?!?!

So, how can I get around Massachusetts on a CNG vehicle if all I have is a debit card or cash? Or can I get o WrightExpress or PHH Card even though i am NOT fleet or business? Or are "prepaid credit cards" acceptable even when debit is not?

Is their another payment method Im not aware of? Like some AVSG prepaid card or something? If so how does this work?

I just want to know how to get around Massachusetts (A Must) as a personal car owner (NOT business, not some truck, non-commercial vehicle) Just for our family to commute for personal reasons. Or is Massachusetts out of my driving area if I purchase the Honda Civic GX?

Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

I've owned various CNG powered vehicles over the last 4 years. In Massachusetts it's AVSG only. The pumps only will accept a credit card. There website is www.avsglp.com. Just get a credit card that gives you cash back on gas purchases.

Hi DesiArnez 6, Sorry about the inconvenience at our stations. Unfortunatly we have no control over the card network that our stations are on. We have asked on numerous occasions if they would accept debit cards. They refuse. I am looking into a prepaid AVSG card for you, unfortunatly the person to make the decision is on a business trip out of country. I will try to contact him tomorrow 7/07. When I get any info, I will pass it on. Thanks, AVSG

You mean that one can't use a debit card that also acts as a credit card? Interesting, I've used my debit card at places that don't take debit cards because they act as credit cards at those locations.

If your 'debit' card has a MasterCard or Visa logo on it, it should appear as a 'Credit' card and still be usable anywhere Visa and MC are accepted (like those pumps). If there is some strange incompatibility, that would be in error, as they are SUPPOSED to accept MC and Visa cards if displaying the logo.

An AVSG prepaid card sounds like it would be a great idea.

Great responses, and fantastic to actually have an AVSG representative on here.

Three more questions then, based on some of the responses:

            1) My "debit" card DOES have a MasterCard logo on it. But does this still mean I cant use it eve though it has the Mastercard logo?

            2) Can I use a "prepaid credit card" from VISA or MasterCard?

            3) Not sure if its an error, are all AVSG payment options the same at all locations? Because the Logan Airport is the only one I saw that forgot to put the "no debit" notice on the government page.

Answers to this would be greatly appreciated. (Car shopping tomorrow!, maybe , if i get a good deal)

**** Note I also realized that not only Logan Airport in Boston, but also TF GReen Airport in Rhode Island also doesn't say "No debit" are these errors? Or do these stations have different rules?

Hi Desi, Logan is no debit, TF Green is on a different network and we aren't sure if they take debit, nobody asked before and we never tried. The question has sparked our interest and we are checking on it now. We are also checking our network to see if prepaid cards are accepted. As for the prepaid AVSG card, we tried it in the past. it took a lot of paper work and setup, and just didn't work well, so we won't be doing it again, sorry. Just curious, could you do a credit card and just pay in full when the bill comes, no interest paid. It is just one way around the system. The more clean and green on the roads, the better for all. Hope this helps and I will get back to you as soon as I get answers. Good luck on car shopping. The deals are there.

              Think Green,

Thank you so much for the information. I anxiously await to see if debit is accepted at TF Green.

Because of cultural reasons (interest), AND major concerns about credit card consumer protection laws , even you try to pay it off before the interest. They will not be an option that I will likely consider.

I suppose my only hope is that AVSG locations can take "prepid credit cards"......

(Otherwise, I'll be stuck refilling in Connecticut and New Hampshire, and THEN going to Massacusetts, then back to New Hampshire and Connecticut over and over..UGH!)

*Note PLEASE inform us also here in the future at the boards should AVSG accept "debit cards" someday. That would likely be of interest to many others as well

Interesting I did recently call my bank out of curiosity and they gave me almost the exact identical answer.

Most money transaction today is done electronically or with plastic. Therefore, some feel that paying a kid's allowance on a prepaid debit card is a practical to teach them how cash works today. However, others see more difficulties with the cards than advantages, and that those lessons could be taught in more effective ways.

Hello the one on RT 44 it will take a MC debit just fine AVSG you could just ask you service tech to do a test it would be a lot faster then waiting for the bank to get back you.

This may be slightly off-topic, but I live in Central Massachusetts and am entertaining the idea of purchasing an NGV. Does anybody know if there is any place in my area that can perform maintenance and repairs on the NG system if needed?

This was from a simple Google search for CNG service and repair in your state. It would seem that CNG may be in your future. Drive one for a while and you'll never go back to gasoline. By the way, please start off-topic conversations as a new thread. Re: How do I refill CNG in Massachusetts if I don't have a credit card?

I have nothing specific to add regarding the NJ station situation, but wanted to add that I've used prepaid visa, mc, and amex cards at gas stations. The trouble is with the zip code verification -- usually I need to walk the card into an attendant to have it swiped.

I suspect that because of this, the prepaid route might not work if the NJ station confirms a billing address and no attendant is on duty.

You might be able to call a prepaid card issuer to ask if there is a "correct" answer to the billing zip code question -- maybe it's 00000. Could be worth a phonecall to stay out of the cultural credit situation.

(btw I am envious of any culture that frowns on consumer credit )

                              Cheers,

                              - Mike
