  • New License Plate: What To Do About HOV Sticker?

I 've already got the California Clean Air (HOV) stickers for my Civic GX. On the ID card it has the license plate listed that was on the car when I applied for the stickers.

Now, I'm getting the vanity plate ON VAPOR. (ON FUMES was taken.) It seems to me I'd have to get the Clean Air ID card updated to show the new plate. I'd hate to hear what the DMV says I have to do, so I'd like to hear from others on their experiences with the DMV.

Has anyone ever done this in the past?

The sticker information is linked to the VIN number so even if you change plate they still know you have stickers. If you needed something else they would send it to you when you got the new plates.

Bottom line, Don't worry about it

The only relevant DMV form I can find is the REG 1000 and it doesn't even cover an event like this, but this must be fairly common. I figure any changes like this must be all documented in their computers under my VIN. If I was running the DMV that's the way I'd do it...

If you are a AAA member, they will answer DMV related questions over the phone. They might need to research it and call you back, but it could be worth a try.

          Mark,

I began to wonder whether a new ID card would reflect my new license plate on it while ordering the new plate at the Auto Club office in Glendale, CA. The lady behind the counter asked around the office and made calls too. No one knew of any forms to fill out to tell the DMV this was happening.

Like Timmon said above, there should automatically be a DMV paper trail showing the change.

And to her credit the lady, Gay, at the Auto Club wants to hear from me on exactly what happened when I get the plates. (Ordered them at Glendale AAA, receiving them at Santa Clarita AAA.) That way she can tell other Auto Club members how the process works.

Interestingly enough, she did say that the whole process is taking longer because the state is releasing convicts sooner and there aren't enough to do the job, so they now have a backlog of orders. (Its hard to find good convicts that can use a spell checker.)

I'll post a message here when I get the plates.

The Reg 1000 has a box to re-issue the id card.

            Section B
            "replacement ID card only"
            and below it
"a replacement is needed because"(ignore the 'sticker' part)
And fill in something like "changed license plates from XXX-YYY to
            AAA-BBB"

DON'T FORGET TO CHECK THE OTHER BOXES FOR ATPZEV AND MOTIVE POWER CNG.

I would include a "statement of facts form 265"

And say the same thing in section G.

            Include an $8 check.

This is the way I'd do it.

            Best,
            Jeff

              Jeff,

Both the lady at the Auto Club and I saw that on the the REG 1000. It seemed like I'd be modifying their form to suit my purpose. And, modifying the form for something they never intended.

I imagine the DMV workers are creatures of habit. Thinking outside the box isn't allowed. They have the forms they use and if I try to modify it to do something that was never intended it could very well bring the DMV to a screeching halt. (not sure anyone of us would notice if that did happened)

So, I'm inclined to wait and see if a new ID card comes with the new plates. It looks like its going to be a long wait anyways.

ID card? What idea card are you talking about? I never got a ID card with my stickers back in 2004.

                  Timon,

I believe the "ID Card" is actually the clean air sticker "Certficate" I received with my stickers. The Cert has sticker number, VIN, license plate, my info, etc. I guess that's what the DMV is calling the ID card on the REG 1000 form.

Interesting, I don't remember getting one with my stickers in 2004. I'll have to check the glove box again.

Well, I received my new plates on 5/24 from the Auto Club. The new registration reflects the new plates, but no new Clean Air Certificate. The lady at the Auto Club said that all that stuff is tracked by the DMV in their computers, so don't worry about it.

Right, tracked by the same California DMV that didn't allow the Auto Club office to access the DMV computers until early in the afternoon on a Saturday when the should have allowed computer access first thing that morning!

I'm not going to worry about it.

The Reg 1000 most definitely does cover events like this.
                        Under Section B:
"Replacement id card only, one box under the next section (ie:ATPZEV ),
Next "Compressed natural gas", then "Other" and fill in : License plate change from XXX to XXX only.
                        Hope this helps.

I assume that $8 is required even for a replacement ID card, Right? Heaven forbid that the state would replace a ID card for free

Yes, it is required. For my replacement stickers I took no chances and even sent a copy of the window sticker with the NG highlighted in yellow. Same with the application for my original plates. It took roughly 30 days to get the replacement stickers and exactly 30 days to get the originals. I had been threw the process 3 times before, so I made sure the dealer got the application for the plates sent in the "next day". I mailed in my request a few days later. Some dealers are notorious for holding the money due to the state for longer than necessary leaving it "floating" in their account. i think that is the hold up as the application for stickers must be stuck in a folder someplace waiting for the plate application to arrive from the dealer.
