  • California DMV strikes again

Got my plates 3 weeks ago (The dealer sent them dhl overnite so I could apply for HOV stickers asap). Sent in form 1000 clearly checked CNG .

The nice follks at the Special Processing unit took 3 weeks, and decided that CNG really means Gasoline Hybryd , and returned the application and check with a nice letter of rejection signed by the dept. manager.

Anyone want to be on a conference call next tuesday when I call Sacramento to have a chat with the DMV manager who signed the letter? I will speak to that person before the day is over. I work in Govm't and am expert at "moving up the food chain" when a manager declines to take a phone call

Our Governater , "Arnold" has asked us folks for was to git rid of a 15 BILLION dollar deficit.

I think downsizing the dmv and sub-contracting the work off-shore to India would hit the spot. Just send a Fed-Ex container filled with dmv clerical work ,each day, each way. It would cost less and I think clerical workers in India might even do a better job.

Does the dealer send you the plates? I thought they just send in the paperwork when you buy the car, and they come straight from DMV. I've only bought about 25 new cars here in CA, but I always remember them coming from the DMV

Could you provide the name and number of this contact? The DMV cashed my $8 check about 12 weeks ago and still no stickers! I would like to lodge a complaint myself.

This dealer requests plates be sent to the dealer , then sends to the customer. First time I've seen it done this way . aparrently , theft of new plates from mailboxes here in LA has gotten really bad , so this dealer pays a little more to do it this way, but never get's irate calls like 'It's been 4 mo., Where are my plates" .

The dmv returned the un -cashed check.

Jonathon : I will let you know who I get through to . I think if you send a pm to curtis , he has an internal number.

Hope I don't have to call the Governors office, like last time I had a beef with the dmv.

Called Sacramento on tuesday , got the royal run around.

I'm going to the governors office in LA this week. Anyone with the same problem, please PM with your info so I can dump it on them at one time.

Stay tuned for part 3 ...............................

                  Re: California DMV strikes again

I just applied yesterday. I live in the bay area, so if you need me to be your lobbyist and drive to Sac, I'll do it. I hate to see that you're "doing the right thing" and get the run around. This process should be part of buying the car. If they're worried about fraud and stuff, then put it in the hands of the dealer.

Sometimes the CNG HOV stickers are confused with the Hybrid HOV stickers. The Hybrid HOV stickers are no longer available.

It sounds like the DMV gets confused as well. I did not have this much trouble getting replacements 4 years ago and did not need to send in old stickers. Apparently since the Hybrids got HOV access, more of the public is aware of the stickers and DMV has had to tighten the process. Unfortunately, the people at DMV are probably more familiar with the Hybrid situation as well, and jump to the conclusion that you are talking about Hybrids..

I have had to send mine back 3 times.

Hopefully this last time will get the issue resolved.

                        Re: California DMV strikes again

I called CARB (California Air Resources Board) today at 800-242-4450 and explained to them again that DMV is confusing my car with a Hybrid. I asked them point blank if there was a cap on CNG vehicles and they said no. They said "it's the law. there cannot be a cap on CNG vehicles, by law." So, my only guess is, we have to complain to DMV, possibly write letters. The fact that this used to work so well and now they are confusing hybrid with CNG is perplexing.

                          Re: California DMV strikes again

                          John,
Do you have your title yet? Look at the box under "motive force" if the dealer CORRECTLY input "N" for CNG, The rest should be easy.

If they incorrectly put "Q" (sounds like they did)then that is why DMV thinks you have a hybrid, and this has to be changed due to a dealer error in order to get the Clean Fuel Stickers issued.

Please send me a private message with all information (VIN#, Plate Number and your personal email and phone numbers) and I'll try and get it resolved.
If they incorrectly titled it, I'll find the quickest way to fix it.
No I don't work for DMV.
                          Best,
                          Jeff

Look at your title. Tell me what the "motive force" shows. If it's a "Q" the dealer screwed up. It should be an "N".
                            Lemme know.

                              Thad,
Did the dealer show "N" as the motive force on the 'report of sale of motorvehicle' ?
This is the form that goes to DMV and titles the car. If you're not sure, I'd check with the finance person at the dealer and push the issue. it ABSOLUTELY has to show "N" or you won't qualify for HOV stickers. Q means hybrid.
