  • Fuelmaker C3 vs FM4 some history on these

I am probably too late on this. But the C3 must have had some bad press in the US because many here in Ontario Canada, where Fuelmaker is built and located, prefer the C3 over the FM series. It is felt that Fuelmaker realized the C3 was superior, but could market the FM series easier, therefore they poo-pood the C3 and put it down.

I know of a firm in the states that is re-engineering the C3 since the patents for the C3 has expired. These bunch of engineers know the C3's capability and dependibility. They believe it is a superior unit.

Personally I have both a C3 and FM4 to fill my vehicles. At first I used the FM4, but for the last 4 years have been preferring the C3 as a fill unit.

Please read the following which I learned from the Research department at Union Gas Limited who had an excellent NGV/CNG program before Duke Energy bought Union Gas and was not interested in CNG....

We have an inventory of roughly 90-100 C3's. We also have spare parts for the C3. We have hundreds of hoses for C3's. We have lots of parts available.

FYI Fuelmakler designed and made the C1 as a prototype ( we have one of these). The next version was the C2 then the C3 in the 80's (not very old).
The C3 was too expensive for the average user, so their board of directors approached their engineers asking them to design an appliance with the same output, safety, diagnostics as the C3, but with a lower price. The engineers came up with the FM4 (Fuelmaker 4) which Fuelmaker started selling at a much lower price. The FM4 evolved to the FMQ etc etc.

Metooinc has an inventory of roughly 90-100 C3's. We also have spare parts for the C3. We have hundreds of hoses for C3's. We have lots of parts available. Netooinc Aslo has FM4's + parts as well as C3 and FM4 indoor refuleling systems.

Thanks for the post. I now have a source to keep my c3 running for years to come.

What is the status of this firm?

        Bob, since you asked,

The new name BRC Fuel Maker is as sister company to Impco Technologies and both are owned by [(FSS Fuel Systems Solutions (FSYS)]

BRC is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of gaseous fuels system components for cars and light trucks. Impco is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of gaseous system components for medium and large trucks, industrial transport and stationary products. (gensets, etc)

When FSS purchased the assets of FM, they had 10 days to move the factory out of the existing facility in Toronto. There was a 24/7 line of semis running to Sterling Heights, MI. Then the machinery, equipment and inventory was moved to the new factory location in Italy. Parts was temporarily located in Sterling Heights and then moved to CA in Febuary this year.

As it stands right now, BRC Fuel Maker has parts and service available through the dealer network and production of new VRAs is up and running. The VRAs are the FMQ-2 and the FMQ-8 and most of the accessory products (custom intall parts) are now available.

The Phill system status is currently in the process of repairing/ replacing warranty units and may be ready to repair/ replace non-warranty units. Production of new Phill systems is expected to be online this summer. (no exact date announced)

All in all, BRC FM has had a lot of challenges this past year and I applaude them as they are really scrambling to get the offerings of the old FM back to a normalized state and honor the warranty of the old FM.

In the future expect to see expanded product offerings, and products that carry the Italian reputation of quality.

Hey, I'm a dealer in Wisconsin and I personally am elated to see the products come back online and be a part of the team going forward. Oscar

If I'm not mistaken then there is not much difference technically between the C3/FM4/FMQ series. I asume they all use the same compressors. I heared you can replace the compressors of old units with newer units, so you can increase their maximum operational hours. Is that correct for all of these units? That would mean that technically you can use a FMQ that just has the cover of a C3/FM4.
