  • How to install IMPCO HPR 3600 vs HPR 3600-GMC

This is a how to for installing an HPR 3600, taking the place of IMPCO HPR 3600-GMC for the Cavalier. It's loaded with pictures to make it easy and self explanatory. I left some things out, so the next revision I'll put it back in, e.g. the final picture under the car that shows how it was finally installed. Let me know if there is anything else I missed or did wrong.

The low pressure regulator on Cavaliers from 1998 to 2003 is mounted on top of the enigne or in the engine compartment. Having never seen a 2004 (but knowing that the bulk or the fuel system is almost totally different from all of the earlier Cavaliers I would suppose that a low pressure regulator could be mounted near the high pressure regulator. The vent lines that I have seen don't restrict the removal of the HPR in any way other then the fact that its close poximity to the high pressure inlet line can make the removal of the tube nut difficult on some cars (line needs to be moved out of the way to fully remove the nut without interference). Once the large nut on the top of the HPR is removed and all coolant and gas lines disconnected, it should darn near fall out.

Need to replace HPR on 01 Cavalier. The Impco HPR 3600 appears to be a close replacement.
However, images from the vendor raises questions that may be answered by those who have performed the replacement.
On the original HPR in the vehicle and in figure 10 on page 11 pictured in the hpr 3600 installation.pdf may 7, 08 rev 0 by dovh49 shows a seal, filter spring and adapter that screws back into the new HPR inlet side stub as it appears has been done in the refitted HPR seen in figure 11.
In the image of the new HPR 3600 provided to me by the vendor it shows a flat faced threaded inlet stub and no apparent recess that would allow one to reinstall the filter spring and adapter. It seems as though a union and threaded for-seal with oring channel would need to be installed.
      Has anyone else experienced this?

It's been a while so I don't remember all the details. But on picture 10 I said that it was for demonstration only that you don't need to take apart the filter etc. You just need to take the whole thing out and place it in the new HPR unit. Also, I think I might have reused the o-ring (I know I should have bought a new one). Hope that helps. Hopefully someone else has done it more recently and would be able to give you more details. Write again if you have more questions!

Also, here's my latest post on the subject:

I think there were only minor changes to the pdf that I made so it shouldn't matter if you look at the current one. If you want to make updates to the .doc file and post it after you do the replacement I can send it to you.

Thanks for the response. The real challenge seems to be that the HPR 3600 from the vendor images does not appear to have internal threads in the HP input stub to accept the oring, filter and threaded adapter. The Ebay vendor image and the April 2010 IMPCO product catalog show a flat face on the HPR threaded stub where the tank tube nut joins the HPR stub.

Could you post a picture? Is it that much different looking than the one I posted? Could you circle parts that you are referring to on your picture?

I just wanted to say thanks for making this guide. My little brother just replaced the head gasket on his '01 cavalier, and used this as a guide on how to clear the system of CNG and how to handle CNG components. My older brother also used this guide to replace the HPR on his '00 Chevy Silverado.

              Thanks again for the guide.

Thanks for the thank you. It's good to hear that it was useful and actually used. Harpoon helped me figure out a lot of the stuff and hooked me up w/ the tool to do the fuel receptacle. He also encouraged me to do it, I probably would have just paid someone to do it if he hadn't encouraged me.
