  • Convert diesel tractor to CNG

Can anyone point me in the direction to a kit to convert a farm tractor from diesel to CNG? What little I know tells me diesels usually run something like an 80/20 ratio of CNG to diesel. Correct? Lastly, what are the EPA regs with regards to tractors? I want to be sure I don't get fined. Thanks.

Being my nit-picking self, I assume that mean a dual fuel conversion, diesel and Ng simultaneously ( not CNG only). Check with Clean Air Power, or Omnitek, or look "google dual fuel diesel cng.

I would suggest going to a new version of the old "torque topping" use LP to add power and clean up the exhaust. you would have more range. How much room do you have for tanks? It would also depend if it is one of the new emission controlled engines.

Most of the applications using cng and a small amount of diesel are on large stationary engines like generators or ships , with an operator on duty.

Not sure if a conversion is pratical , more like repower with a dedicated cng engine.

Medium duty truck and bus cng engines are usually baised on a diesel block , but are spark ignited at 10/1 or 11/1 compression ratios. All of the cng busses i've seen are spark ignite.

I'm sure someone else has more on this.

I have done some work on these systems. The big problem on a tractor is tanks, size, placement and filling. Unless you live close enough to a fill station to drive there, or have a fill station at home it is not at all practical.
I can offer some advice but this is not the forum to do so.

I am running a 855 ci cummins in a class 8 truck on 70 30 duel fuel and it is a no brainer as I have free cng at the house and there are plenty of stations now on the interstate have only run out once and that was by choice as I wanted to go home and did not feel like going through evansville so I just paid the price for diesel if you pm me as I get in poo poo here for using bad words and talking about things that work I will tell you how to do it the bigest problem you have is fueling the tractor the convertion is ez

If it's a farm tractor, EPA emission standards are not so hard as they are for over-the-road vehicles.

Re: Convert diesel tractor to CNG

Under the radar, I'm sure there are bunch of diesel pickup trucks running blended fuel (ie diesel mixed with cng) - - UT, OK, etc where cng fuel is cheap.

This summer in Oklahoma I ran into guy filling up cng in 98 Dodge diesel pickup. He had blend of maybe 30% diesel/70% cng and was getting around 100 MORE horsepower, and obviously better MPG overall. At time ONG had cng at $1.11/gge so he was driving real cheap.

Eventually, there will be lots of EPA-compliant conversion setups to utilize cng on diesel pickup trucks (ie dual fuel).

For big tractor trucks, I'm sure that Westport or similar conversion QVM can handle it. Research NGVAmerica website or Clean Cities for more info. CNG speaker at Tulsa, OK seminar (Steve Yborra, Director of Market Development, NGVAmerica) said that tractor trucks with greater than 435,000 miles or 22,000 hours could have blended diesel/cng setup added with no EPA ramifications (ie due to OUL - - outside useful life). All of his Powerpoint pages to seminar are to be available within few days either on www.ngvamerica.com or Tulsa Clean Cities website.
