  • Group Question-What is the max range on your CNG vehicle?

I get this question a lot. I already know the answers, and I say "answers" because it varies with what you drive. A GX can vary from model to model. A Crown Vic, the same, and with different gge capacities for factory aux tanks. What I want is a simple reply with the year, make, gge capacity, average/max range for you. What's your hiway cruising mileage/range?
If your driving conditions are a factor, ie: all mountains, all flat, mixed, etc you can specify.

A lot of NGV buyers are commuters. Their inquiring minds want to know.

2002 Civic GX. I've never "seen the light" and have done as much as 213 miles on the tank. It was right on empty, but there still was no light.

          8gge tank: my average fill = 4.8gge; max fill ever= 6.26gge
average range before fill = 162 miles*; max range travelled = 227 miles
          average mpg = 34.33 over 2700 miles; max MPG = 43.60

The reason my range before fill is 162 is my average commute is 55 miles round-trip with no fueling station nearby... when I get to ~160 miles, I know I still have enough gas for one more day of commuting, but there's little margin if I have an emergency, so I usually fill up to be on the safe side.

Would it be safe to say that the commute is "stop and go" as opposed to open road cruising? And how much fuel was left when you refilled at 227 mi?

I would get that light checked. It's a valuable resource that most GX owners would dread not having available to them.

Re: Group Question-What is the max range on your car?

Yes, the numbers I posted were mostly stop and go because I had not received my HOV stickers yet. I just got them, so it will be interesting to see how much the MPG numbers increase from the higher higway percentage. My highest MPG numbers were when I was able to do 90% highway driving. Normally it is about 50/50. With the sticker, I guess it will be 80/20.

When I filled up at 227 miles, I had no ticks left on the fuel gauge, but based on ~10 miles per tick, I'd be comfortable going another 8-10 miles. I filled it 6.26gge that time.

Regarding the low fuel light, mine comes on when I have two ticks left. Yes, I would definitely get your car checked out if your light doesn't come on. On the other hand, I find myself checking the fuel gauge regularly so I would probably be okay without one.

With a usual fill, about 3.8-4.0gge @ 3600psi, I can go about 170 miles (85% [email protected]+mph) until the light comes on, then another 20 safe miles, so about 190.
If I go out of town on the weekend, I can top off after 8 miles, get 1-1.5gge and that extends my range an extra 30 miles.
My normal commute is 142 miles round trip. I do 620 miles a week with a one night stay in the OC.
I suggest putting a K&N air filter on, they cost about 40$ and you will notice better performance and mileage.

My 01 F150 has only had 2 full fills, both a little over 15 gallons. 190 miles on the first and 204 for the second tank. My fuel light came on for both tanks. My mpg is 12.2 & 13.5. I was hoping for for 15 or better. This is all city driving with very little freeway. My truck is a 2wd std cab with a 5.4 triton, auto.

with the 5.4 that is all you are going to get for MPG with city driving. Hwy driving I consistantly experience 15 mpg with the 5.4 in both trucks and SUV's on CNG

                            Fastfill #s: my average fill = 9gge; max fill ever= 9.9gge
average range before fill = 260 miles; max range travelled = 298 miles
Usually light comes on at 225 miles - with highway driving I get 40-50 miles more. I do not use a Phill (wish I could).

I have run out before, but the Camry CNG is kinder to runouts than my 2000 Civic GX is ... i can usually limp along several miles until I get to the nearest pump. I've had to tow the GX a couple of times on runouts, never the Camry.

I have a 2007 Honda Civic GX, but I haven't tested the maximum range on it since it's dedicated and I don't want to pay for a tow trip just to find out. However, I just bought a 2000 F-150 bi-fuel CNG/gasoline truck with the 7700 heavy duty package from fabwest.com. The dealer said that he thought it had about a 9 GGE CNG tank; however, I took it from Broken Arrow, OK to Oklahoma City and back to Stroud, OK on the turnpike before refueling. Just before I arrived at the CNG station in Stroud, the low fuel light came on. However, the guage wasn't down to the empty line yet, so I'd guess I had about 1 GGE in reserve left. The trip meter showed 175.5 miles. When I refueled at about 3300 psi, I got 10.5 GGE in the tank. For a fast fill, I thought this was quite a bit, so I'm guessing the tank is about 11 or 11.5 GGE in capacity. If anyone knows what size tank Ford put in these factory bi-fuel F150's for the 2000 model, please let me know. Judging from this trip, it looks like the truck gets about 16.7 mpg on the highway - not bad for what is basically a 3/4 ton truck.

                              Vehicle: 2000 F-150 7700 w/ 42,000 miles
