  • CNG World Record

A German team last year drove a dedicated CNG VW van around the world on all five continents achieving a world record. The van had a 2500 km range with numerous tanks.

The Germans did it first, but how about a USA team beating the time record and also use a CNG hybrid maxing out MPG and achieing a world record in MPG using CNG around the world. That would bring some press to CNG.

actually I was thinking of a Nash Metropolitan or King Midget. A Willis overland might have a little more room. I know, an International Travelall (my dad had an International Dealership).

Your point is wll taken Curtis

John Mitton where are you.... Step up to the plate build a CNG Malibu Hybrid.... Now thats American Muscle... This would bring attention to CNG world wide. And we could also enter it into the 10 million X priZe. We wouldn't have a chance at 100 mpg but what the hell it's an attention getter.

We can modify the Hybrid and add Lithium Ion battery's to extend the range via a Plug in option ,,,, I'm sure we can get some help on this from Prius Plus ..

We could ask GM to supply the cars Fuelmaker and all the big CNG compressor, cylinder, and parts companies for sponsorships.

For support cars we would need a truck with lots of cng tanks for a portable filling station, And a Suburban or two for the support team. Thanks GM. There not selling any way...

                    Brain,

I think that is a great idea to approach GM about the vehicles. What great advertising for them in a time of need. Well that is if they will open their eyes to CNG fuel. And after its all said and done they can auction off the vehicles for even more advertising!

I was even thinking maybe an old American Iron 50's car with a modern frame/suspension & power train slid up underneath it This would draw even more attention but probably too much trouble and money to put together.

The American idea is great but an international travelal lots of room for the tanks but your talking 5,800 lbs or more to move.Nah the only thing you could use for this is a classic Chevy 55-57 Nomad panel, ( nothing say's American more) lots of room for the tanks, use a 5.7-L with a 700-R4 trans. with an external over drive better yet 6 speed out of a late Corvette. This should give you about 24-28 mpg. Plus there's lot's of fiberglass and alloy parts for the car easy to come by.Tare weight would be about 3,300 lbs.Room for driver and navigator, No EPA standards.

It got put off for this diesel/cng rig we've done, we are almost done testing it. 15k miles in 1 month is not easy to do. Still considering an insight or a Prius (as much as I hate the Prius) Insight great MPG, Prius great trunk space. American I don't know what would work best

                            Re: CNG World Record

I like the Nomad. Seriously, a small dual fuel diesel the could run on about 90% cng with a hybrid drive would be good combination. The body would the problem.

A guy I use to work with had a Vega wagon in which he put a Nissan diesel with a turbo and and 5 speed manual. Used it for 80 mile round trip commute and got over 40 mpg. He drove in for over 20 years.

A small wagon with tanks layed long ways (get rid of the rear seat). You could get a couple of 60" X 18" tanks type 4's in the back -- maybe more.
'75 and older is out of smog.

                            More possibilities please

OK Larry 60-67 Ford Falcon wagon, finding one that might be a problem, one it's smaller than the Nomad but not near as many aftermarket parts, fiberglass or alloy. Also the 60-67 Nova 2 wagon, I like the big truck idea you have (International is built in Canada). You've done a great job on it 15-K miles in a month that's murder. From 67 up until 70 I think America dumped the small car idea then you have the Pinto HA HA HA or the Vega.Mopar did not have anything that small.
