96 and before?

New here. Been checking out conversions, but the EPA Cert ones are kind of pricey. Please help me understand the 96 and before rules and the availability of kits, is there a good outlet for them and where. I am in Indiana, they don't inspect didly here, but also don't want to break laws or be unsafe! I am a hobbiest garage mechanic, and thinking about buying 96 and before gas hog SUV's and pick ups and converting them for resale. Let me know if I'm nuts!

'94 and '95 were transitions years for OBD II. Most manufacturers had OBD II and non OBDII vehicles. Check the type of computer system that the vehicle was certified under on the vehicle's emission label under the hood. The kit you choose would have to be compatable with computer system used on the particular vehicle (OBD II or not OBDII). If in doubt see if the vehicle has 16 pin OBD II connector. (of course the federal '94 Camaray had both connectors but ran on OBD II).

If you're serious about this undertaking, contact your local college about where you can get cng certification training. High pressure systems are dangerous and require specialized training. This is not a hobbyists endeavor. Conversion companies will not sell you the equipment to do a conversion unless you're a liscensed conversion shop. The market is right for people with this training and great opportunities are on the horizon, just do it right, legally and safely.

Curtis is right. A 3600 psi line knocked loose will seriously fold, spindle and mutilate you. There may limits on how many you are allowed to convert before you are considered to be a Small Volume Manufacturer--check my thread on Spec Questions for the EPA and figure out exactly what questions you need answered and I will try to phrase them in terms that will receive an answer.

You're nuts! All SUV's should die... Think of the scrap metal potential, it helps keep the chinese people working.

Ok seriously, if your into resale and doing conversions as a "business" IMO cover your ass and use the EPA kit, it cost much less then potentially getting sued later on. The trick is finding the right vehicles to convert and that are already EPA certified.

Btw, where at in Indiana are you?
