Re: can used cng tanks be shipped ups?

I talked to my manager and he said it should be ok to ship an empty cylinder. I also talked to the front counter agent and he said he confirmed what my manager said. I would call the dangerous goods line and ask them. Don't say its a "Fuel Tank" they probably freak out, its a pressurized cylinder.

Heres the Fed Ex DG number:
    1-800-463-3339 ext 81

BTW, I would ship it using freight to get the cheapest price, plus its the safest way to transport.

    Good Luck,
    Anthony

If the tank is empty it shouldn't be a big deal. I take oxygen tanks to the ramp every once in awhile. I'll ask at work and see what the deal is with tank shipments. You might have to treat it as a dangerous good because it's a flammable gas.

I wonder if you purged out the NG from the cylinder, and then filled it with some low pressure amount of nitrogen (or other inert filler gas) like say 25psi and created some type of visible large-size label to certify the contents during transport, and advised the carrier of this fact as well, maybe they would let you do it then? And even if they wanted you to treat it like hazmat still, then you could do that for good measure and put the hazmat label on it as well.

You can't ship used CNG tanks, unless you use an independent carrier that doesn't flip out about hazmat, DOT, etc. You tell them it is a fuel tank, and they will tell you they can't ship it. Been there done that. I ended up driving over 1500 miles one time because nobody would ship a CNG tank. Another problem that some carriers have is the fact that a CNG tank is heavy, and the weight requirements for packages are over their limit.

Yeah you should be able to ship using ups. At Fed Ex we take up to 150lbs using regular air mail. Over 150lbs will have to be pallatized and sent freight.

    Good Luck,
    Anthony

BTW, I'm curious as to how much it costs.

I have used uship.com a couple of times to ship tanks. Its like ebay you post what you want to ship and people bid on it.
    cheers

I think 80lbs is the limit for UPS. Then you have to use UPS freight or some other shipping company.
