  • Honda Civic GX Head On Crash

Woe is me. Some lady in a hurry ran a stop sign and I t-boned her. Luckily she and her two kids were strapped in, as was I. But I got the worst of it. Knee hit the steering column and shoulder was scraped from the seat belt or side curtain. I got the worst of the injuries. As long as I can heal and play golf, I will be okay.

Anyway, Nationwide is saying they probably will not total the vehicle. The value of the conversion may actually hurt my chances. Something to do with the residual value of the car. Actually, the engine did start after this torpedo shot. Initial estimates were around $10,000.00. I am throwing this thread out for ideas or things I should be concerned with.

Insist on new OEM parts and make sure they put new airbags in. Also, I would try to get a bodyshop that has worked with CNG vehicles before as there are special considerations that need to be made when putting the vehicle into high temperature paint cure. Insist on having the insurance company reimbursing for the additional refueling costs you incur with a gasoline rental vehicle.

Glad to hear your injuires aren't any worse, juts curious what was your speed when you ran into her? Looks like quite a bit of damage to the front end

Was the lady on the cell phone, I've known quite a few folks who had accidents due to someone using the cell phone and paying more attention to their conversations than driving.

Sorry to hear about your injuries. Hope you heal quickly.

Now, about your gx. The nationwide adjustor must be in need of an eye exam. IMHO , the vehicle is a total . Has well over $15,000 in damage, and that assumes no damage to the tank. As to the residual value, any gx anywhere near Utah is selling for over blue book and they know it. It IS the job of the adjustor to offer you LESS than fair value. YOU must insist on a fair settelment or you will not get one.

When you are feeling better , time to have a chat to make sure "Nationwide is on your side"

            Glad you are not hurt.
I have been hit before, in a classic muscle car and the insurance tried to lowball me.
You have the right to take the car to ANY body shop of YOUR choice.
Unless the laws have changed, they must repair it, or replace it (or pay you fair market value) for a comparable car, similar miles, condition, and equipment.

They might also play games with your rental car payment to try and force your settlement. The last time I was hit by someone, they gave me 3 days rental car after their FIRST (really low and crappy) offer, even though we turned down the offer immediately.

            Good Luck

Great idea about the reimbursement on price differential.
              thanks so much

I was traveling 40-45 mph. Just slightly over the posted 40. And unfortunately, I was the one on the cell phone.

I made sure that the car went to Ken Garff Honda. They are the only authorized GX dealer in the state.

Push for a like vehicle rental at their expense, when my Jimmy was totaled, the insurance company tried to put me in a sub compact. I drove a Jeep for a month and they paid for it.

You bought a natural gas vehicle, they can pay for a natural gas loaner.

I am surprised the car started after a hit this hard. Does anyone know if the GX does not have a inertia switch to cut the fuel tank valve like standard EFI gasoline powered cars that cut the fuel pump after an accident?

I don't remember on the generationVI & VII , but i'll check the owners manual for my 08. I sure hope it does. With the tank check solonoid closed, only a minimal amount of gas can leak even in the worst collision.

If it will start and run for more than 20 to 60 seconds after a hit this hard there is something wrong and you should call Honda to have one of their factory field technicians look at the car (not just the dealer).
