  • Toyota Camry CNG original sales price

Hello all, I am lucky enough to have purchased a 2000 Camry CNG. I couldn't be happier. However, I'm worried my insurance company won't give me fair market value in case I need to make a claim in the future. I paid $11,000 for her and as we all know, a gasoline powered Camry is worth about $8,500. Does anybody know of any Car and Driver reports or Motorweek reports which list the original price of such vehicles. I don't think my insurance company realizes how much these are worth. KBB and Edmunds don't even know they exist.

One way of documenting current prices would be to find out what other CNG Camry's are selling for on e-bay or other web sites. A lot of web sites tell whether a car is available or "sold." Contact the seller to find out what they sold for. That would probably give you more data points than the Ins. Co. has.

Educate the insurance company by telling them times have changed, gasoline Camry's are a thing of the past, CNG is the wave of the future. How could they argue against that?

Found this for a gov fleet

"... Cost ($24,986 per vehicle, including sales tax)"
Prob. a low-ball since they wanted seven...

Problem is, I've only seen one Toyota CNG camry on Ebay in the last year. It was a "buy it now" of $15,999 and nobody 'bought it now.' The problem is the same, there are literally almost none to compare it with. Only having one or two doesn't really constitute proof of fair market value. However, I did recently write to Toyota in Torrance, CA, with the same question. I suppose if anybody knows, they'll know. Thanks for everybody's input.

I did not know they made a CNG Camry. Is this a conversion or a Toyota OEM?

Toyota OEM, made in Japan. They provided 150 of them in 2000 and another 150 in 2001 to a few fleets in Southern California. SCI provided them with a huge 19 x 40 inch 11+ gge tank for the trunk, which required Toyota to actually do some re-engineering on where they put the suspension system But the result is a great range (compare with the Civic GX having an 18 x 35 inch 8.5gge tank)!

Toyota also produces a CNG vehicle for the Japan market. It is a boxy-looking sedan called the "Probox" powered by a 1.5 liter dedicated CNG engine which sells around 500 units per year.

You are very lucky to get one of those. I have never seen one. I am just entertaining of converting one, but parts are so hard to get....

I read the same thing you did. In fact, I found a car magazine with the same specs and it included the original sales price of the 2000 CNG. Problem is, I can't find that link anymore.

I've sold 5 of these. Have your insurance co. call me. I get these calls all the time from insurance companies who insure you bad Utah drivers that wreck your CNG vehicles. I'll put it on the money, but it's definately worth more than $8500

Hi, Thank you. So, what do you about insurance and fair market value? My insurance tells me that if there is a claim, they will base the claim on FMV. What did you tell your insurance? As you know, only 300 were made. I'm in Long Beach. I may see you at the show.

I believe the CNG Camry was considered an experimental car. My insurance co. could not find the V.I.N. It didn`t exist. They did insure it but you all make a good point about the cars insured value.
I too will drive my Camry till the wheels fall off

                            Hi,

I wrote to Toyota and got it! The original sales price was $22,680 while the gasoline-version base model was $18,318.

This morning at the Anaheim station a 2000 Camry pulled in to fuel, and I told the guy about our site. He asked about my fuel capacity, and I told him about 6gge, and then told him the tank expires in 2014 (his 2015) and he had no clue!
