  • Hummer's out, Volt is back in

Sounds like Chevy may redesign or sell off the Hummer product line. Also, the Chevy Volt is back in with plans to produce 100,000 by 2012. The new model would be a hybrid with up to 150 MPG.

Amazing, someone in Detroit decided to finally start listening to the customer ...

I've heard the same from a close source in Detroit.

Why don't they keep the Hummer and make it CNG?

Re: Hummer's out, Volt is back in

I've made a few H2 hummers CNG already very hard to get a lot of CNG on board. My daughters still has hers and enjoys it. But she commutes within a 10 miles radius of our house.

She gets 13 mpg on CNG (it's a Hummer) but we pay $1.40/ gallon, with gas currently at $4/gallon it would be the equivilent of the Hummer getting 37 mpg. Majored in aeronautical science so hopefully my math was right. And if we lived in Utah at 63 cents per gal it would be 82.5 mpg not bad for a H2 Hummer

Goes to show, yeah your Prius may get 45 mpg but at $4/gal. My Hummer carries more, hauls more, does more, is 4x4, not afraid of dying if hit by another small car, ect...not to mention teh Hummer is manly, for you manly men out there. The Prius? Well... anybody every seen Peanut and the Jeff Dunham Show?

Re: Hummer's out, Volt is back in

I was told by a friend in the automotive industry that the carbon footprint of a prius is many times that of a Hummer even on regular gas...the shipping needed to make the battery cells is unreal.....hybrids are a joke bring on te CNG

                Dyno,

That myth is ANCIENT and has been debunked about 1000 times.

                RE: The Volt
It's nice but about $15,000 overpriced, when you've got EVs from Mitsubishi around the corner for low $20s.

And, it should be electric+CNG (or at least bifuel), not just electric+petroleum

Re: GM Formally Unveils the Production Version of the Volt

John Davis, from Motor Week TV Show, was one of our presenters here at Big Sky tonight, and this was part of the presentation. I have some interior shots I'll post when I get back. It looks almost exactly like the New Honda Insight that's getting ready to come out. It seems that once they got the prototype into the wind tunnel... it turned into a brick. Aerodynamics dictate body shapes, so this is going to be a very common looking style for efficient cars in the years to come.

I was at a GM marketing event at Anahiem Stadium a few years ago. At that event they were showing off their H2 H1... it was a H1 converted to run on hydrogen. As I recall it was part of the Governator's "Hydrogen Highway" promotion.

It was at the same event I was able to drive one of GM's fuel cell cars built on an Opel platform...it looked like compact minivan. It was strange to hear the engineers talk of the pressures required to run hydogen. Considering that my '99 CrownVic is rated at 3k psi, I was shocked to hear that they were talking H2 pressures in the 10-12k range.

Fueling also looked sounded as though it would be a bit more complicated. The engineer who rode with us on our test drive described how the dispenser would require 2-way communication with the car to determine pressure & temp of the fuel tanks. Our test car had a 20-pin communications connector along with an oversized fill valve (oversized when compared to CNG fill valves). I can't help but think that the communication could be done wirelessly . . .

Everything considered, it was a good event for no other reason than it convinced me that buying a Buick Rendevous was a bad idea when compared to a Honda Pilot. They made the mistake of allowing me to test drive both within a short time of each other. :-)
