  • Propane Fueled Vehicles

Does anyone here own a propane (LPG) powered vehicle? There are currently no new propane powered vehicles on the market but a few companies sell conversions. Has anyone ever dealt with or heard of Poweredbypropane.net ? I tried writing to them, they usually do not write back. Anyone here bought anything there?

I know Toyota is producing taxi (model YXS10) for domestic market, running on 2 liter propane engine (3y-pe). I think it's the same engine that was installed in earlier Toyota Vans sold in US and forklifts. For pics and info http://autorama.jp/nmauto/eshopitem....TAXI+CAR&mi=68

Unfortunately, importing a car to US is not feasible, otherwise we'd have tons of Japanese Domestic Models here, never mind the right hand drive. In Russia this is huge, and people love them. I know in Canada you can import if the car is over 15 years old, but I've heard this is about to change.

To answer your question, yes, once in a while I see propane cars on Craigslist in SF Bay area, but nothing consistent.

About a year ago , Rouch engineering was going to have new F150 dedicated direct injection propane pickups, ordered from select ford dealers in Texas.

The website is stale, not much info, and without carb approval , no new availability in CA, and without CA SULEV , no HOV access in ca.

Propane is cheap in the summer here, about 2.20 gallon now (about 96,000 btu), last winter , it got close to $4 gallon.

I would buy one if it was carb and ca sulev rated.

I saw the Rousch truck in Vegas, pretty cool. I'm mid way through converting my 79 Elky to propane. Had to stop when I blew the 350 but have since dropped a 383 stroker into it. Gas prices immediately skyrocketed so I have been driving the GX exclusively as of late. I'll keep my fingers crossed when it's time to smog it again... dread...
Propane in Ca seems to be limited to heavy trucks. Haven't seen anything else since the 70's. IMPCO is the king of LPG. They had a way cool converted Mustang in Vegas that they drove up from Texas, I think he said.

I have a '91 V3500 p/u that runs lp, and also a '72 Impala that is lp only. I have lp injection on my '95 Suburban that has a Cummins 4BT, but hope to soon convert it to cng. My Dmax has lp and cng, but I'm getting ready to pull the big lp tank from it because lp has gone up so much in the last few years. Even buying it in bulk it costs alot more than cng now.
'04 Silverado Duramax w/cng injection system
          '95 Suburban 4BT Cummins w/cng injection
'05 Jeep Liberty diesel w/cng injection
          '91 V3500 454 LP gas
          '72 Impala LP gas

With propane prices going up, I can understand why number of LPG vehicles on the road is reducing. It's just too expensive for what it is. I have a different type of concern. It is the availability of gasoline.

CNG vehicles are hard to come by. Conversions are discouraged. Propane is not cheap, but vehicles are available for purchase. It is actually possible to buy one. While CNG is better in many ways, advantages do not go far when one cannot buy a CNG vehicle at a price without premium. Owning a CNG vehicle at this time is not a financially sound option for me and many other people outside the State of Utah. There is an alternative.

If someday there is gasoline shortage, I want to have that LPG car or truck. It is not cheap to run (about the same as gasoline) but when choices are between driving and not driving, LPG has some advantages (over gasoline that is).

I own a 81 1 ton chevy on propane. Are you looking for SGI? Or a propane carb? The SGI systems are kick ass and have way more power than a carb setup.

Sequential Gas Injection. I have seen propane carb systems, but you are correct, SGI works much better. Ford had a dual fuel LPG/Gasoline F-150 equipped with 5.4L v-8 with SGI, it worked great. I am actually looking for one of those. They are out there, people are not fighting over them, I should be able to pick on up without paying a premium.

I have a propane powered (bi-fuel) Ford 7700 pickup. I'm planning on converting it to cng unless I sell it first. Propane in Utah is too expensive.

                          Re: Propane Fueled Vehicles

I'm running LP on a '97 F250 HD with a 460 for about 9 years. Use in for pulling a 28 ft 5th wheel trailer. Works great if the price of propane is less than 75% of gasoline. Propane is running aboutn $2.50 per gal out the door up here in Washington. The tank is a dual manifolded 10" by 60" with 40 gal water capacity. Good for 160 to 190 miles pulling (16,500 lb) and around 270 to 300 miles solo.

I'm using the "new version" of the OHG mixer and X-1 vaporizer/regulator (put out by Marilyn Miller from Babberstock's old cores), dual curve interface box for the OBD II tie-in. Need to do a little air bleed trim on the dithering valve to keep the feed back system in working range. On the dyne 178 hp @3600 on gasoline. Flipped the switch, stabilized the system, a pulled 172 hp @3600 on LP. Emissions were about the some for HC and CO, NOx was about 30% lower, and CO2 was just under 13% on LP and a just under 15% on gas.

Let's get the price motor fuel down.

I was at Sanderson Ford's commercial truck office (in Glendale Arizona) a week ago and they had two brand new f-series pickups with Rouch propane conversions. The sales agent said that they were a $12,000.00 option. I was trying to get info as to the cng conversions through BAF that I had heard about, so I didn't get any more info.
