    Frito-Lay, which is already pioneering alternative-fuel fleet operations with a major electrification initiative, was the subject of a recent New York Times blog that highlighted the company's efforts in putting compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to work in its fleet.

    Writer Jim Motavalli reported that the company is going to deploy 67 CNG-powered trucks over the next few months, and long-term plans call for the "majority" of its long-haul fleet to run on natural gas. Right now, Frito Lay is using 18 CNG trucks in a pilot program.

    "The good news is that it's a win-win for us, both in terms of our sustainability strategy and reducing our costs," Michael O'Connell, senior director of fleet capability at Frito-Lay, told the Times. "The payback for the extra cost of the natural gas trucks is a year and a half, so it's a little bit of a no-brainer."

    CNG availability for long-distance hauling is the only issue preventing this change. But since nowadays there are some extra costs involved with Diesel engines, mainly due to the DPF and DEF currently being required, it seems to ease the acceptance for CNG. Cold-start ability is also a point to consider.

      The first CNG tractor arrived at the Vancouver WA Frito_Lay traffic center 13 March 2016. Mike OConnell, senior director for fleet operations for Frito-Lay North America, announced plans in 2013 that called for 208 CNG tractors to be put into service across the nation. They will comprise 20 per cent of the Frito-Lay fleet and be located at 50 per cent of the Frito-Lay distribution centers.

      2014 figures which are in for the Beloit WI Frito-Lay distribution center show Beloit Traffic has been averaging about 83,000 miles per week on the CNG fleet. Beloit has 32 CNG tractors in operation and 2 more were added in 2015. A CNG Hostler Truck was also purchased to improve fuel costs. Assuming 83,000 miles per week x 52 weeks per year, the Beloit site runs approximately 4,316,000 miles yearly on CNG fuel. This was a fuel reduction of approximately 624,602 gallons of Diesel fuel saved by the site maximizing its CNG fleet. The MPG also improved drastically with an average of 6.91 MPG on the CNG trucks in comparison to the diesel fleet average of 6.95 MPG. The CNG Fuel costs were approximately $1.99 per DGE at the pump verses the diesel fuel at an average of $3.68 in 2014. Over the year this was roughly a $1,055,577 savings in fuel costs.

      Mary Botcher, president of Trillium CNG in 2013, cited the advantages of natural gas as being abundant, U.S. produced and burns cleaner. She went on to say that the expansion of the CNG fueling infrastructure will make compressed natural gas available to a greater number of fleets traveling busy commercial trucking routes.

Trillium station will allow three Class 8 trucks to fuel simultaneously at 10 to 12 GGE per minute using the fast-fill Trillium hydraulic intensifier (HY-C) technology. The station will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will accept all major credit cards.

        Trillium CNG has more than 20 years of expertise in designing, installing and operating heavy-duty high-performance CNG stations with the lowest lifecycle cost and an ultra-fast refueling experience. ​. The site locations are based on customers demands that CNG stations be built near their key shipping lanes off of major interstate highways. Vancouver was one of eight Tier 2 locations considered by Frito-Lay in 2012. Trillium dispensed more than 2.2 million GGEs to Frito-Lay last year.               Vancouver WA TrilliumCNG station will be opening early May but Matheson is already operating Kenworth sleeper cabs with a range of 700 miles between Seattle and Los Angeles hauling US Mail.

              The company introduced 12 LNG Kenworth T880 day cabs in Oakland, CA, in January and has completed the deployment of 17 CNG Kenworth T680s in Boise, ID. Matheson is in the process of taking delivery of eight additional CNG T680 sleeper cabs for its Los Angeles (LAX) to Seattle (SEA) runs.

              With a conservative range of 704 miles on a full tank, these CNG tractors are ideal for shorter routes where refueling may not be required for a roundtrip. During CNG refueling, heat is generated during the 3,600psi intake process, meaning gas expands requiring up to a 30 minute waiting period until the psi level returns to 3,000psi before the tank can be topped off top with another 15 to 18 gallons. In any business time is money, and saving a half hour or more is important for scheduling and on-time delivery.

              The CNG tractors destined for Boise include five, three-axle sleepers; 10, three-axle day cabs, and two, single-axle day cabs. These tractors pull a mix of trailers in Boise, with most in the 53-foot long category, used to transport U.S. Postal Service mail along designated routes.

              Last March and April, Matheson has also acquired 22 fuel-efficient diesel Kenworth T680 sleepers for use in Seattle, WA, and is currently deploying 24 additional diesel Kenworth T680 sleepers for use on a variety of the firms Salt Lake City routes – for a total of 46 new diesel tractors purchased in 2015.                 Nov 2015 Frito-Lay has renewed their agreement with Clean Energy to support their 200-plus CNG tractor fleet across Arizona, California, Nevada, Ohio, Indiana and Texas. The new contract is expected to significantly increase the fuel volume consumed each year.

                  The CNG station at 5420 NW Fruit Valley Rd Vancouver WA is now powered up as reported by one of the Northwest's drivers who filled his Silverado today.

                  The station was built to accommodate the Frito-Lay Traffic Center a few addresses away which received its first Volvo tractor March 13th. It completes a string of 24/7 CNG card lock stations on the Interstate 5 corridor open to fleet card and consumer bank card holders (addresses in attached map):

                  Public CNG fueling for interstate travel, which has been growing in the Central and Southwest regions of the country, is now available in the Northwest.                     Frito-Lay, it turns out, had Agility Fuel Systems provide both high and normal flow fill receptacles installed on both sides of the back-of-cab tank package. Didn't realize this until I saw a truck fueling at the Vancouver WA fueling station hooked into the right side of the truck.

                      Matheson Postal Services has been moving mail coast-to-coast for the U.S. Postal Service since 1964. Matheson operates 95 CNG trucks on its contracted mail routes, hauling 78,000-pound loads through diverse terrains, running more than 16.4 million miles annually. These trucks are scheduled to be delivered in late 2021 and early 2022.

                          Matheson is now running CNG big rigs north and south on the major highway east of Interstate 5 in Oregon. Highway 97 enjoys fewer grades (and shorter highway distance) between Sacramento CA and Vancouver WA.
