    Hyliion Founder and CEO Thomas Healy told Hard Working Trucks’ sister publication, Commercial Carrier Journal, that by using renewable natural gas, fleets can enjoy government incentives set aside for the carbon-negative fuel.

    When fueled with RNG, Hypertruck’s carbon intensity score actually runs below zero. The California Air Resources Board reported in 2018 that RNG’s carbon intensity score was as low as -303.30 while electric scored between +25 and +38.95. RNG production captures methane that otherwise would have entered the atmosphere where the EPA says the gas is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

    Healy explained. “I was just on a call with a fleet that told us that they can actually source RNG for less money than they can actually source CNG. That has to go back to those emissions credits and savings and government incentives, which is kind of remarkable when you think about it. It’s like, ‘I can get a cleaner fuel. I can get it for less money.’ This is the perfect solution for fleets.”

    Hyliion states that its powertrain “produces electricity at roughly 30% less than the average grid cost, which yields a seven-year cost-of-ownership unmatched by any diesel, battery-electric (BEV) or hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) Class 8 truck under development.”

    When fueled with RNG, Hyliion believes the truck’s lower operational costs, its 1,300-mile range, established natural gas infrastructure and government incentives brought on by its negative carbon footprint will convince enough fleets to step up to the truck’s estimated $220,000 price tag.

    Though he would not reveal the name of the manufacturer behind the natural gas engine currently powering the Hypertruck ERX prototype, Healy did say “We’re running about a 7.0-liter type size engine. That’s what we found is able to produce enough electricity to drive the Dana electric motor and keep the batteries topped off.” Thanks to the truck’s onboard generator, the Toshiba lithium-titanate battery pack size can be trimmed down to roughly one-tenth the size of a pack required for an electric truck that is powered exclusively by batteries.

    Regardless of the generator used, “we’ve got more horsepower and torque than a conventional diesel truck,” Healy contends. “It’s really enjoyable to drive.”

    The powertrain is currently being tested in a Freightliner Cascadia day cab. Initial Hypertruck ERX fleet demonstration vehicles have been allocated to customers for delivery in 2021, with series shipments scheduled for 2022.

      Hyliion was mentioned in this 2016 article. The product was to have been a complete tandem with axles, brakes and suspension that would replace a trailer’s existing tandem.

      Dana was to have provided a 300-hp Remy motor-generator that would transmit energy to a battery pack that nestled between the rails of the slider box. When power was needed, electricity would be sent to the motor, and it would propel the trailer through the axle diff and shafts to the wheels. The hybrid-electric tandem weighed 400 to 500 pounds more than a standard tandem, but much of that was offset by changing from dual wheels to wide-base singles:

        26 June 2020 Biomethane - Hyliion launches Hypertruck

        Agility has confirmed a pre-order of up to 1,000 trucks.

        With CNG available at more than 700 public stations across the US, Hypertruck uses a fully electric drivetrain and a CNG-powered onboard generator to recharge the battery, the Hypertruck ERX will provide more than 1,000 miles of range. It has a seven-year cost-of-ownership unmatched by any diesel, battery-electric (BEV) or hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) Class 8 truck under development.

        The truck is the only electric Class 8 vehicle that can achieve a net-negative greenhouse gas emissions footprint by using RNG.

        Continuing Hyliion’s long-standing partner relationship with Dana Incorporated, the Hypertruck ERX will feature Dana’s electric motor, inverter and axle technologies, and Dana plans to provide its state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities to support Hyliion in achieving full volume production of its powertrain systems.

            Alan Adler for Freightways Oct 8, 2020 - Hyliion's heavy-duty hybrid trucks use CNG to generate electricity

            Dana Inc. says it is in for the long haul as a technology partner and investor in Hyliion Holdings Corp., the maker of diesel-electric hybrid systems for Class 8 trucks.

            The lower horsepower and torque of their first-generation CNG trucks prevented Wegman’s from pulling tandem trailers. Hyliion retrofitted one of Wegman’s newer CNG trucks with a Dana e-axle. The Volvo tractor now routinely pulls two trailers.

            Hyliion’s first 20 hybrid trucks are now in customer possession. The Wegmans experience is a precursor to the HyperTruck ERX.

            Hyliion will use lithium-titanate (LTO) based chemistry from Toshiba for the HyperTruck ERX batteries. LTO batteries charge faster than more commonly used lithium-ion batteries. But they are less energy-dense. Hyliion accepts that trade-off because a single LTO battery might last the life of the truck.

The reason? RNG is produced by capturing methane, a gas that CARB considers to be much more hazardous to the ozone layer than other gases such as CO2 and NOx.

              Healy explained. “Actually, I was just on a call with a fleet that told us, as weird as this sounds, that they can actually source RNG for less money than they can actually source CNG. That has to go back to those emissions credits and savings and government incentives, which is kind of remarkable when you think about it. It’s like, ‘I can get a cleaner fuel. I can get it for less money.’ This is the perfect solution for fleets.”

              Hyliion Founder and CEO Thomas Healy said government incentives, coupled with the lower fuel costs, will help fleets step up to the truck’s $220,000 price tag. Hyliion, which has been in talks with several OEMs, will focus on supplying truck manufacturers with high volume sleeper and day cab models.

              Lower maintenance comes courtesy of the truck’s electric powertrain, which includes regenerative braking. “It will definitely reduce the brake wear and tear,” Healy said. “Overall, we expect it to have less maintenance than a diesel. That’s just one of the big benefits of an electric powertrain. There are less moving parts. You don’t have a transmission anymore."

                Hyliion Inc. says it has equipped Canada-based for-hire carrier C.A.T. Transport’s fleet with five of its Class 8 hybrid CNG systems.

                Hyliion’s hybrid system adds up to 120 hp through an electric axle, increasing the available horsepower of a conventional CNG truck by 30 percent. The electric axle provides additional power to achieve diesel-like performance while still benefiting from a cleaner and cheaper fuel.

                “If things are going well, the goal would be to equip the 100 or so trucks in the fleet,” remarks Daniel Goyette, president of C.A.T. “It all depends on the results that the product will give.”

                    John Hitch for Industry Week Nov 20, 2020 - Nikola Is Still Trucking

                    No truck maker has had a more tumultuous 2020 than Nikola Corp. Yet the company plans to start producing trucks next year, initially rolling out the Class 8 Nikola Tre out of an Iveco plant.

                    Through the California Air Resources Board, the state has provided funding for several projects, including battery-electric truck pilots with OEMs Daimler Trucks North America and Volvo Trucks North America. DTNA’s eCascadias, due out at the end of 2021, have accrued half a million miles. BYD also announced DHL will deploy its Class 8 electric trucks in the Los Angeles area.

                    Recently, most of the traditional heavy-duty OEMs have also explored fuel-cell powertrains. Kenworth and Toyota have had a partnership in place since 2019 to fit the Kenworth T680 with fuel cells. Toyota Motors North America and Hino will also begin testing fuel-cell electric trucks (FCET) based off the Hino XL Series on North American roads in 2021.

                    While the questions around electric truck charging are currently being practically figured out and vetted, understanding how to realistically install the hydrogen stations to power fuel-cell electric trucks is still in the nascent stages. They believe they have solved that problem and have 700 hydrogen stations planned in the U.S.

                    Nikola has also joined a consortium to fuel heavy-duty FCETs that includes Hyundai, Toyota, Air Liquide, Nel and Shell. This will help standardize components such as hoses, nozzles and receptacles, Russell said. The fact that FCETs can fill up in the same time as a diesel truck, versus several hours for EVs, is another major selling point.

                      Westport Fuel Systems Inc. has released a joint publication with AVL, an independent company that specializes in the development, simulation and testing of powertrain systems, entitled “Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analysis for Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fueled Powertrains.”

                      “Our analysis shows that a high-efficiency hydrogen ICE powertrain can outperform fuel cell electric vehicles in terms of TCO,” says David Johnson, CEO of Westport Fuel Systems. “This is possible because H2-HPDI uses powertrain systems in high volume production today while achieving near fuel cell-like efficiency in heavy-duty applications. Fleets will appreciate a product that meets the same performance characteristics of today’s conventional diesel trucks without the product development risk and costs associated with fuel cells. HPDI 2.0 is already used by large fleets today, reducing CO2 by 23% with fossil LNG, and delivering net-zero carbon emissions when used with bioLNG.”

                          Nikola Corp. has secured an electric rate schedule with Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) for hydrogen production facilities able to respond by reducing energy consumption from the electric grid during heatwaves. This will support, among other things, enabling a zero-emission heavy-duty freight corridor along the I-10 freeway between Los Angeles and Phoenix.

                          The company will now work with APS to establish its first hydrogen production facility in Arizona.

                            Kenworth recently delivered its first two CNG hybrid trucks to drayage and warehouse supplier Total Transportation Systems Inc. in Southern California. But the state’s regulatory shift from lower to zero emissions means they likely will be the last.

                            The prototypes were developed over four years, funded by a California Air Resources Board grant. They share components that Kenworth is using in a fleet of hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks built with Toyota. Five of the 10 trucks are being tested in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

                            “In the last three years, [California has] switched from reducing to eliminating emissions,” Brian Lindgren, Kenworth research and development director, told FreightWaves on Wednesday. “I don’t see us pressing forward with this design at this point.”

                            Kenworth is taking orders for medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission battery-electric trucks for delivery later this year.

                            That is what startup Hyliion Holdings is counting on as it begins customer trials later this year with its natural gas generator-powered electric Hypertruck ERX. Hyliion expects to be able to travel 25 or more miles on electricity created from the generator.

                            The Kenworth hybrid-electric vehicles use the Cummins Westport L9N Near Zero emission engine fueled by CNG. Lithium-ion batteries supplement power from the generator when climbing grades.

                            The hybrid gets 23% better fuel economy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 18% compared to a conventional natural gas powertrain, Kenworth said.

                            “We thought at the time we drove into this project that it would be an interim step,” Lindgren said. “California has transitioned already. And 15 states and the District of Columbia have said they might follow.”
