    Frito-Lay Grows CNG Fleet

Frito-Lay celebrated the opening of a new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Dallas the third week of October, advancing its large-scale commitment to alternative fuel. The station at 4200 Duncanville Rd is open to the public.

The CNG station -- owned and operated by Questar, a natural gas company that has two other fueling stations in Texas -- bolsters Dallas’ current CNG infrastructure. Frito-Lay is the anchor tenant at the new station, which is also open to other companies currently using or thinking about alternative fuels for medium and heavy-duty trucks in the future.

Frito-Lay will continue to grow its CNG fleet, bringing the total number of its CNG tractors to more than 300 by the end of 2014. Once deployed, the CNG tractors will make up 30 percent of Frito-Lay’s fleet.

    Re: Frito-Lay Grows CNG Fleet

“As we push to make Frito-Lay's fleet the most fuel-efficient commercial fleet in the U.S., we need to continue to build on our current strategy and look for options to address other types of trucks in the fleet - one of which will be compressed natural gas for our tractor fleet,” continued O'Connell.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) tractors will be introduced this spring, and will be used to haul large loads. Each CNG vehicle, purchased from Freightliner, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 23 percent compared to diesel. With 67 CNG vehicles planned to be on route by the end of the year, Frito-Lay will eliminate the need for more than 900,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually. Depending on fuel tank size, the CNG trucks can range 300 to 740 miles.

The CNG vehicles will be used at seven Frito-Lay North America distribution centers: Rancho Cucamonga, California; Irving, Texas; Phoenix and Casa Grande, Arizona; Beloit, Wisconsin; Frankfort, Indiana and Charlotte, North Carolina. The company piloted 18 CNG vehicles to prepare for the roll out.

I'm sure a lot of leftovers from the production of their snacks could be used as a feedstock for bio-CNG in the future...

          Re: Frito-Lay Grows CNG Fleet

The proposed Questar public CNG station that was to have been built in Killingly CT was "killed" as a result of feedback from residents at a hearing, including that of residents of the only 6 homes near the site. It was to have served the nearby Frito-Lay truck fleet. The objections were mainly based on zoning and noise. Yet, a satellite view of the Lake Road and Alexander Parkway Killingly CT site shows a preponderance of large commercial development - including a full-blown electricity generating plant for the region! Permitting things in Connecticut must be harder than anywhere else in the country!

ByKyle Field for CleanTechnica Oct 7, 2019 - Frito-Lay Ditches Diesel For CNG At Modesto Hub

Parent company PepsiCo, Inc. is replacing the fleet of diesel freight vehicles that service its Frito-Lay plant in Modesto, California with zero-emission and near-zero emission vehicles. The equipment in the project includes:

15 fully electric Class 8 Tesla Semi trucks
6 fully electric Class 6 Peterbilt e220 straight trucks
              38 Volvo CNG-fueled trucks

A public American Natural Gas CNG station at 4383 Leckron Rd Modesto CA is adjacent to the facility.

Half of the funding for the $30.7 million project comes from state Cap and Trade funds through the California Climate Investments (CCI) program while the other half of the funds are being put up by project stakeholders Frito-Lay and ANG in cash and in-kind contributions from Cafe Coop. The Modesto project directly supports Frito-Lay parent company PepsiCo’s goal of reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030.

Dale Lunan for Natural Gas World 9 Sep 2021 - Joint venture allows Chevron to acquire ANG's 60 CNG stations across US

The joint venture with Mercuria will allow Chevron to rapidly grow its RNG value chain, building on a commitment earlier this year to open more than 30 Chevron-branded CNG stations by 2025. Its first, in Napa, California, was opened in June.

Chevron is committed to producing a tenfold increase in RNG volumes by 2025 compared to 2020.

Tina Casey for CleanTechnica 22 Sept 2021 - NYC Beer Distributor Spikes CNG Fleet

Fleet managers began converting from diesel to CNG many years ago. Manhattan Beer Distibutors has made some huge investments in both CNG trucks and CNG fuel stations since 1999, including Volvo CNG trucks. The company has seemed pretty happy with the cost savings over diesel. MBD owns a fleet of hundreds of trucks, and quite a few of them are CNG trucks.

MBD’s five new electric trucks will be put to the test with heavy payloads on routes with return-to-base requirements. That dovetails with a battery range of 150 miles and a 70-minute timeclock for an 80% charge.

A leading beer and beverage distributor will put Volvo's electric trucks to the acid test in New York City traffic.

20 Nov 2022 - Chevron U.S.A. will take full ownership of Beyond 6 LLC and its network of 55 CNG stations

Mercuria and Chevron will enter into a long-term supply relationship to deliver renewable natural gas to Chevron as part of the transaction. Founded in 2004, Mercuria is one of the largest independent energy and commodity groups. Over the next five years, the company will direct half of its investment toward the energy transition.

Through collaborations with Brightmark LLC and California Bioenergy LLC, Chevron is developing projects across the United States designed to convert fugitive methane emissions from dairies to a beneficial use as RNG, which can be considered carbon negative on a lifecycle basis under California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, the company stated.

The energy company can market the renewable natural gas it either produces or procures through the acquired sites.

Convenience Store News 20 Jan 2023 - Frito-Lay Modesto CA Facility demonstrates near zero-emission benefits

The project, which began in 2019, sets to demonstrate the sustainability benefits of zero-emission (ZE) and near zero-emission (NZE) technologies. It is supported by the California Climate Investments (CCI) initiative in conjunction with the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

6 Electric Teslas tractors and four Tesla 750kW charging stations to provide the semis with up to 400 miles of range in one hour of charging. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay are now the first company to have a commercial fleet featuring the electric semi, according to the company.

38 Volvo VNL CNG tractors fueled with RNG from a public access CNG fueling station owned and operated by Beyond6.

The total project grant for $15.4 million covered a portion of the Frito-Lay transformation and a public CNG station. The grant share for Frito-Lay was $12.2 million and the match funding required $13.5 million in cash and in-kind services.
