  • Rear speaker wiring?

    GX Team,
Those of you who have installed rear speakers somewhere in the back (not in the doors), is the wiring already run into the trunk/CNG tank area, or do you have to pull up the side carpet and edge covers to run cable to the radio?
I would think it must be stubbed into a connector near the trunk area that would be a simple add-on crimp connection to new speakers.
My dealer cound not determine if so from any diagrams they have on my '08 model.

Re: Rear speaker wiring for 06-08 GX's ?

There is no wiring to the rear of the car, unfortunately. This is to avoid someone trying to run speaker screws through the back shelf and damaging the tank. GX owners have been putting box, or wedge style speakers on the rear deck and running the wiring as you described, with great results. It's a bit more effort to hide the wire, but the gain in sound quality makes up for it.

      Re: Rear speaker wiring?

      Next question:
How does one remove the radio or otherwise get access to the connection point on it for adding rear speaker wiring? Perhaps the dealers have a diagram or info? Or do I need to buy the factory shop manuals, and hope that shows it?
I don't want to take it to a auto stereo shop and chance getting a hacked up job having this done, not to mention the cost.
(It was a rough go just installing the Honda factory kit inside wiring for the fog lights [with printed instructions], and I am concerned about taking wrong steps to do the speaker wiring without adequate instruction).
      Any experienced suggestions appreciated! Thanks

        Re: Rear speaker wiring?

I was just at Circuit city the other day talking to them about the in-dash nav system for the GX. They have all the factory plug-ins for the back of the radio and for tapping into the stereo speaker system, etc. Personally, I'd be far more comfortable taking it to a reputable stereo shop and paying $40 OR $50 to have it done right. It's not like the old days where they tapped into wires and made their own connections with splices. Everything is off the shelf connectors and looks like factory wiring when they get done. I leave that stuff for the experts these days... too many electronics and things that could go wrong. Use somebody that will do it right and stand behind their work. That's my advice.

I believe there's a special tool they use to seperate the plastic face plate from the dash. If you are determined to do this, I'd go to a stereo shop with a large pizza in hand and ask for a few pointers and see what they can do to guide you.

            Re: Rear speaker wiring?

you can order the directions for removing the stereo for about $5

Just make sure you have plenty of time - don't want to try to hurry and miss a screw or tab and cause damage that could cost more to replace than the install in the first place

BTW - we ordered spacers and grill covers off eBay to raise the speakers and mounted them on the rear deck - painted them with the interior car paint to match - looks pretty good!

                link to pics
the magnet on the speakers sit just above the metal plate with a little padding between them so there is no rattle

Where did you get the cubes to mount the rear
speakers? are they well made? What size speakers
                  dose it fit?

What speakers are you useing? How dose it sound?

                  Thanks for any info.

                  Jeff.

                    Re: Rear speaker wiring?

One thing I'm considering is installing higher quality speakers in place of stock pair. Combined with a compact tube-type sub under the seats that might do the job without messing around in the back.
