  • Cleaning Injectors - In Car

    All,

I have searched and have not been able to find an answer to this question:

Is there a safe way (that will not damage injectors or regulator) to clean the injectors while they are still in the car?

I have read about some people using Sea Foam or the Motorcraft Injector Cleaning and putting in in the HP Filter Bowl and allowing it to run through the system. Many say it works and some say it does not. Due to the fact I cannot get a straight answer on this specifically for the CIVIC I am trying to post it here.

Is there a way to do this and if so what is the best method and cleaner?

Curt, does Honda have anything spec-ed for this or do they simply tell technicians to replace an injector when it is sticking?

    HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

    Thank-you!

Re: Cleaning Injectors - In Car

That's a good question, Daniel, a call to my service dept revealed that the Honda injector cleaner (for gasoline models) is added to the tank. The prior method was through a pressurized can of solvent that tapped into a needle valve access that sat on the injector rail. I tried to see if my '04 had such an access point, but I couldn't detect one...although the air-box could easily have ostructed visual access.

My service mgr will check with the head cng mechanic on Mon... if I remember to call him. So If I drop the ball, rattle my chain again early next week. I would have to say that my instinct says that Honda has no offering to clean the injectors on the cng model... Perhaps it's something for them to look into. It seems like a logical solution to a perpetual problem, assuming it can be made to work on the GX. Perhaps another of the group has some experience with this.

          My response from Curtis:

          Re: Injector Cleaning

Finally, all the calls and checking revealed that Honda has no process or products for injector cleaning. They advise that there are some companies that rebuild the injectors, but we already knew that. They're listed in the parts exchange forum.

I was fairly certain that this was the case but I needed to hear ir from service before I spoke out of term.

Has anyone else tried this and been successful? I am trying to put this argument/question to rest. Basically, Honda does not recommend it from what Curtis found.

Re: Cleaning Injectors - In Car

I just performed an "in car" injector cleanse this evening. After developing a lack of power and a slight hesitation upon acceleration I figured it was time to dig in and see what I could do. Driven my 2000 GX for nearly 70K miles now with no maintenance other than oil and belt changes. Somewhere in this forum I came across a document from Ford on a procedure to clean their injectors. I thought I'd give it a shot on my GX. I just purchase some off the shelf injector cleaner from Walmart and a new filter from CNGUtah.com ($30). Followed the procedure and it worked like a charm. No more hesitation or random engine bump. I'm sure most of the remedy was the clean injectors with a slight part of it being a clean filter. 200K miles and still going strong!

Here is the Ford recommend procedure for those interested.
