  • GX Won't Start

    Hi
I have a 2004 civic gx. I have had it a couple of years. The other day i started it went a couple hundred feet and it quit. I put it in park to start it again and nothing, can't get it out of park and won't start. Had it towed home. It is not the battery or starter. It blows the # 17 fuse evertime I try to start it. That fuse says fuel pump. I started disconnecting wires one at a time and when I pull the plug on the high pressure block it does not blow the fuse and tries to start. It is not the high pressure switch, I just spent $114.00 to find out. My dealer here is pretty sorry on the gx. I could really use some HELP on this one. My e-mail Is <--------------------> I would appreciate any help I can get.

    Thanks Keith

Dont post your e-mails in here, there are computers that all they do is visit websites and harvest e-mail addresses. Use the PM feature.

      Re: krobinson GX won't start

We had a high pressure regulator go out and the symptom is that it doesn't start. I'm surprised a Honda Dealer (GX certified or not) would charge you but not offer a solution.

        Re: GX Won't Start

Underdash fuse 17 only connects to the following components: SRS Control Unit/PGM-FI Main Relay 2/ECM. The most common problem I have come upon is a internal short in the fuse box. The only way to make sure it is the fuse box is to unplug SRS control unit and see if it still blows. If it does then go to the next component (PGM-FI main relay). Good Luck!

          Thanks Honda Tech
But what is the SRS control unit/PGM-F1 Main relay2?ECM,Where is the SRS control unit and the PGM-F1 main relay. I know where the one is in the car by the steering wheel and then there is one outside under the hood on the passenger side ? Sorry for the bother. Our Honda GX dealer here is no help.
          Thanks KRobinson

You can buy the GX Supplement Shop Manual (I'd buy the regular shop manual, too) from Helm that will answer all these questions and give you troubleshooting procedures (although some require special tools).

                Re: GX Won't Start

Since you already narrowed your problem to fuel, here is some pointers.

PGM-FI main relay 2 is located behind the glove box. That relay provides power to the Fuel Tank Internal Solenoid Valve, which you can access the connector from the left side of the trunk. It also provides power to the Fuel Pressure Regulator Solenoid Valve, which is on the right side of the engine compartment. Also, there is a gray check connector on the left side of the battery, if it is touching ground in anyway, will blow the #17 fuse. You really need to take this car to a GX dealership. It will be difficult to find the short, especially if it is a wiring issue and not a component failure.

I think it is safe to say that component failure is much more likely than a wiring problem.

                    KRobinson-04 GX Starting Problem

                    Hi Curt
I have an 04 honda civic gx. I have had it to two dealers, one didn't know what to do so I took it to another one that has gx experience. It would not start or even turn over and would keep blowing the #17 fuse. If I pull the wires off of the fuelblock sensor it would try and start but wouldn't fire up.
The honda dealer put in a new fuel pressure reg block and now says it tries to start but won't. Now they want to put in a new fuel tank. That is an expensive prossive of elimination.
Is there a valve in the fuel tank or is it the valve at the end of the fuel tank? I am lost for an answer but I can't afford to replace it if it not the right fix.

                    Thanks krobinson

                      Re: krobinson

Sorry to hear of the problems you're having. Since I drive an 04 too I'd kinda like to know the answer to this as well. I will present this to my top GX tech when he returns after Thanksgiving and see if he has any insight into this issue. I've found that unless a tech has seen a particular problem before, it tends to be tricky, and often expensive to diagnose and repair. As you pointed out, it's often a process of elimination, which can be financially painful. By the way, where are you located?

We have some techs and mechanical whiz kids with tons of cng experience here in the group that may recognize the symptoms and chime in, but I'll investigate from my end as well. Worst case, I'll take it to Honda and see if they can provide some answers. It would seem logical that the guys that worked on it before would have consulted Honda's Tech-Line. In the mean time, I'm going to move this thread over to the GX forum for easier reference, so please follow it there.

                      Happy Holidays,
                      Curtis

                        Re: KRobinson-04 GX Starting Problem

Sounds like they dont know much either, just replace parts til it starts is too exspensive. they should be able to test if the car is getting fuel, if not test each system from the tank valve to the fuel rails to find the issue. I would certainly not replace the tank on a quess.

                          krobinson:
I don't know if this is still a problem for you or if it has already been taken care of; I hope the latter. If not, this may be a solenoid issue like mine. You can check my thread it is the one about a 7000 dollar repair. My solenoid had a short in it so that gas would not go to the engine and of course not start. My fuse kept blowing as well but I'm not sure if it was #17 or not. Please feel free to check the thread, if it is the same problem I'm sorry but there are not many options unless you have a mechanic who is very familiar with cng vehicles.
