  • Slight Starting Issue?

    Hi all,
Quick question i'm hoping you can answer. It is probably minor but due to my knowledge of this type of car i'm asking no matter how dumb it may be..

I have a 09 Civic GX. Approx 600mi on it.

I usually have the key in the ignition and wait to hear the famous "kerclunk" from the back before I turn on the car. This morning, I turned the ignition and the starter went but no motor turning. The car started after the 2nd try but my question is what could have happened?

    No gas in the cylinder?
Turning the car on too fast?
    Gas line issues?

    Thanks!

you know i had the similar problem happen to me a couple of times and i also have a 2009.... the first time it happened, the car started on the 2nd try... second time, the car would not start after like 4-5 tries..... i just assumed there was no gas in the cylinder....

i wonder if there's more to this problem... anyone else have this problem?

      Re: Slight Starting Issue?

My 2008 GX has done this on occasion. It has only ever happened in the
morning. My car has 6200 miles on it now and I think it happened maybe
      5 times.

I don't think it is getting any worse, or better for that matter. My guess is
that every once in a while, for some reason, it doesn't get the fuel mixture
just right and it takes a little more cranking to finally suck in the right mixture.
(Remember how the air/fuel ratio for natural gas is much narrower than that
      for gasoline.)

I have an 2007 GX with 11,000 miles on it. I've had this problem about 5 times (just yesterday afternoon, in fact). It has always started on the second try.

          Re: Slight Starting Issue?

I've had this happen a few times with my '04. I tried to talk to service about it today, but was too busy to get the opportunity. All these sound identical.
          Cold engine only, usually morning
4-5+ seconds cranking won't start on initial try
2-3 second crank starts it on the second try.
Sounds like varying age and mileage, as well as model/engine all do the same thing. Anyone else recognize these symptoms? I doubt it's a big deal, but I see a pattern. I'll see if there's a known idiosyncrasy with cng that I haven't heard of.

ok i know it's not your gx. but on my pickup. if i crank it over just a little bit and pump the gas. and stop after just a second and do it again it seems to make the starting a lot easier. i think it might be because of fuel building up in the system or something in that range.

The motor didn't turn, but the starter whirred? If that's actually what happened, it sounds like a starter solenoid not engaging

                Yep,
So because we've seen this issue with older and new GX's is this a big deal?
Is it something that I should take into the shop for?
                Thanks,

                  Re: Slight Starting Issue?

The issue I referred to was cranking, but not starting.

If you had the starter spin, but the engine not turning over, that sounds like the starter, as Bundo said. If it happens again I'd have it looked at. That is definitely not normal behavior and I've never seen it on a car that didn't have an issue with the starter selenoid.

                    Re: Slight Starting Issue?

I had the Honda Mechanic look at it and he told me that he couldn't find anything wrong with the starter solenoid. Since it was an intermittent problem and starts on the second try it shouldn't be any cause to worry.

Not only that but I've got a 7y 125K end-end warranty so I'll be cranking away... LOL
I'd say 99% of the time the car starts on the first try.
