  • Car cutting out at high speeds

Driving in to work yesterday my car was cutting out above 60mph, so I managed to make it driving slow behind semis. I called around and found that the Honda dealer in Cerritos was my only option. I took it in and explained the problem, so they took it out and could not get it to fail. Around 5pm they finally figured out the problem. It seems the car was leaking oil and there is a sensor that will cut the engine off if the pressure is too low at a certain rpm. It turns out either the pan gasket or rear seal is leaking, although I never see any oil in my driveway. They did give me a free rental car and I had to buy gasoline OUCH. I spent all day in their customer lounge and temperature was around 80 degrees. Hopefully I will get my car back tonight.

Interesting to know. Thanks. Good luck on the repairs.

I guess it is a reminder to keep an eye on the oil. My 02 seems to use about 1/2 qt in 5000 miles.

They also installed the blanket in case someone sets the interior of my car on fire.

Good deal. I still need to do that as well. Just don't like to take the car in and I don't let anyone smoke in it...

Do you know if a Honda NGV dealer needs to do it - or can it be a regular dealer?

I'm not really sure, but I would just call your closest dealer and ask. They said they service a lot of GXs there at Norm Reeves Honda, and they were the ones who suggested doing the recall, and apparantly had the blankets in stock. Oh yeah....my car is ready!

Johnny, if you don't see oil in the driveway... it's not really leaking. It is probably seeping a little oil around the gasket, almost a normal condition on higher mileage cars and not generally necessitating the big expense of a gasket replacement. But a mechanic will try and talk you into it every time...

Yeah well my car is back in the shop. I picked it up last night and drove it to Tustin, and it cut out briefly once right before I got off the 22 freeway. This morning I got about a mile and the check engine light came on. I called the shop and drove it in, it ran OK, cut out a few times but not as violent as it did on Wednesday. As long as I stayed around 60 it was fine. I have not heard anything yet.

Re: Car cutting out at high speeds

Since oil pressure should go up with rpm, my SWAG is going to be "faulty sensor".
Plus (hopefully) that would be the cheapest fix.

That's frustrating. Let us know what it turns out to be.

They called me Saturday and now believe it is the cat. They wont have one until Tuesday, and are going to give me some compensation on my bill for all the unnecessary repairs. In the meantime I got a Mazda 3, it's a nice car but no cruise control. I am not happy about having to spend the extra money on gasoline either.

They called this morning, it looks like they probably wont have my car ready today. I sure do miss the HOV lane, it probably added 20 minutes to my drive today. The Mazda 3 is getting fairly good mileage, I filled it today took 9 gallons for about 320 miles.

The new cat was installed and it still is cutting out. I am waiting to hear what's next.

They should explain it to you in person. But, maybe one of the Honda wizzards on here could help figure it out. There are probably some sort of service codes on the invoice.
