  • 08 Honda GX sun visor falling apart

Just wondering if anyone else has had defective sun visors. I've had to have both of them replaced already. I think the heat in the interior is causing the seams to break where the hinge is. Poor quality on these visors or just a bad design? I expected better from Honda.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Aparently it's a common problem on the 06 and up Civics. 3 of my co-workers have experienced it, and my wife just had to deal with this on her '08. I'm expecting it on my GX within the next 10k miles. Apparently they break about every 20k miles for the people I talked to.

There is a service bulletin out on the visors for the 06 and newer. The dealer may be able to do a "Good-Will" replacement for you if the car is out of warranty. It is their call though.

hehe.. sorry.. i had to chime in with my chuckling.......

Remember, just because you paid $25,000+ for it, it's still a civic. It is, basically, a cheap, compact, 'throw-away' car with an expensive fuel system strapped in it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good throw-away car, but it's still a throw-away. There's not much difference between the $13,000 base model and the $25,000+ GX. What difference there is certainly doesn't reside in the sun visors.

Well I beg to differ, I wouldn't exactly call a Civic or any Honda a throw away car. I grew up with a Honda Civics in my family. I own several Land Rovers (Discovery and Defenders) and a Volvo (XC90) and in the past a Lexus LS400, and they've all had quality issues. I've also had several Honda Civics and Preludes, these so called "throw away cars" have all been driven over 200K miles and I've never had a quality issue problems with any of them. My other so called high brow cars still can't measure up to my old Honda's. Sometimes simple throw away cars are just plain better. I'm just dissappointed that they didn't do a better job on the quality on these visors.

I guess a lot of folks aren't exactly throwing away their high mileage Honda's you see on the road. I'm sorry but a cheap Honda doesn't equate to throw away in my book.

You're right, Crazi, I've had to throw every one of my Honda's away... usually at around 400,000mi... well, actually I sold them at 400k and someone else drove them until they had to be thrown away. As I remember it, I got what I paid for some of them.

That's actually why I switched, I was tired of selling my american cars to Pick-Apart (for $50) at 150k.

Does this include the 2009 models, or did they change the visors? Are the replacement visors (under recall) improved, or will this continue to be a problem?

One of my co-workers has had his driver's side visor replaced 3 times so far on his 2006 Civic. This seems to indicate it is likely cheaper for Honda to continue producing crappy visors rather than re-design them. I would be curious what a Honda official has to say to this. Anyway, I would rather drive my GX with both sun visors broken off than a perfectly running Ford Crown Vic CNG any day.

Adrian may have answered that for us, but I'll check with service when service gets back in.

I had the driver's side visor on my '07 replaced 17 months after buying the car. The replacement is starting to crap out now with 16 months of use.

I have had other non Honda vehicles for far longer and never had to replace any visors on them.

It may be questionable whether the car is a throw-away, but without a doubt the visors certainly are.

I've come to the conclusion it's a beginner's car; a commuter car. Rough idle, rattling door panels & rear deck, poorly designed sun visors, etc.

I've 3 replaced already under warranty and the lastest is just as crappy. I've resorted to using a large binder clip to hold it together, seems kind of cheap ass and ghetto but it works. Unfortunately my car is out of warranty, so I'm going to have fab something up here at work, something a little more eye pleasing. Honda knows its known problem but I think their phasing out their crappy inventory.

As a matter of fact you do have to throw the car away on its 15th birthday.

We just had to change the driver's visor on my wife's car again. Honestly, after 4 visors total, this is becoming very annoying. Annoying enough to avoid buying another Honda since apparently saving a couple of bucks by keeping a crappy design is more important to Honda than changing a design on a visor and showing some consideration for their customers.
