  • Which Would You Buy?

Today I need to make a decision, selecting between two brand new Honda Civic GX's. I'm curious which you would buy and the reasons why...

    Car #1
    New 2008 Honda Civic GX
    Alabaster Silver Metallic in color
Car in stock for immediate delivery
    Sales Price -- $25,427.
    (MSRP plus $167 for options)
    Document Fees -- $ 55
Other DMV Temp Permit Fees -- $ 48
Shipping (from dealer to me) -- $400
    Bottom Line Price -- $ 25,930
(Note: I will pay tax and registration direct to Utah DMV, as the
tax rate here is 6.25% on new cars, vs. 8.25% in California).

    Car #2
    New 2009 Honda Civic GX
    Royal Blue Pearl in color
Car scheduled for delivery to dealer between Oct 1 and 10
    Sales Price -- $25,460
    (MSRP less $300 discount)
    Document Fees -- $150
Other DMV Temp Permit Fees -- $ 10
Shipping (from dealer to me) -- $850
    Bottom Line Price -- $ 26,470
(Note: I will pay the tax and registration direct to Utah DMV).

I'm trying to figure out if it's better to buy the 2009 and spend $540
more than the new 2008. I'm not crazy about the blue color -- wish
I could get the 2009 in the Green Tea Metallic, but can't find it without
huge markup. Silver was our second color choice, but can't find a 2009 in Silver at same or near same price.

As I understand it, the primary changes 2008 vs 2009 is the front
grill. I've been told all of the mechanical systems, etc., are the
exact same. And the decal on the side doors is redesigned. Are
there other differences anyone is aware of?

I appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

And yes, the $300 discount on the 2009 is correct. This is a Honda dealer many states away (thus the much higher car carrier transport fee) from whom I have purchased a fair number of cars over the years.

    Thanks.

There are some green 2008s at Galpin Honda in Los Angeles (818 area code).

      Michael --
Thanks for the information about Galpin Honda. Yes they did have a couple
of 08 green GX's, but they are also charging $3000 over MSRP, which I simply won't pay. As I mentioned in another post, they acted in what I believe was a very unethical manner. Two different people from Galpin clearly told me I could buy a new 2008 GX from them for MSRP or less, so I told them I wanted to proceed. Out of the blue came the "market adjustment" upcharge of $3000. This was after many conversations when we had discussed pricing, availability, shipping, not paying California tax, etc., etc. I understand "supply and demand" and Galpin wanting to get what they can, but I expect to be treated in an honest manner. They totally wasted my time, even though my first question was "Do you have any new GX's in stock?" When they said yes, my very next question was "are you selling them at MSRP or are you marking them up?". They told me MSRP, or even below in some cases.

Stupid, yes. Unethical, no. I remember that thread. You knew it was too good to be true when they gave that answer, didn't you? You should have asked to place a deposit to reserve the one you want at that price and make sure it was signed by someone who had authority (like the sales manager). Then you would have found out that the salesperson (or in this case the office manager as I recall) were giving the answer that covers 99% of their cars, but not GXs (or Fits probably either).

          Re: Which Would You Buy?

You need to ask yourself a couple of questions:

          1. How long are you going to keep the car?
          2. Who are you going to have service the car?
          3. The 2009 has revised front and rear lighting and front grill treatment.
          4. Color preference?

Lastly, all things equal, if you can buy a model year newer car at the same time for only $500 difference it's a better financial investment. Since the 2008 is already a year old (regardless of the miles or the month it was built) it's still a year older model. Sitting side by side, the 2009 is a better buy.

Buy the car that you can touch (and drive off the lot) today. Tomorrow is a whole new ball game.

+1 for the "bird in the hand" approach.

I would take the Silver one. It stays cooler inside and doesn't show dirt as bad
