  • 1998-2007 Civic GX Recall Information

Honda will be sending out 2 letters regarding this matter shortly.

Many of you recall an incident a while back where a GX was
intentionally burned inside a garage resulting in a tank rupture.
Honda's investigation of this act of arson revealed that a fire in the
rear seat area can cause uneven heating of the tank resulting in the
relief valve not working as designed.

The solution is to install a fire blanket between the rear seat and the
tank. Once Honda has the part in stock, they will send a 2nd letter out
to you inviting you in to have the blanket installed.

A copy of the letter being mailed out is atttached should you wish to refer to it.

    Recall repair

Is Palmdale Honda the only place I can take my car for the repair in our area? Half a day in the shop is a major inconvenience. Alan

      Re: Recall repair

In the Antelpoe valley you can use Lancaster as well, but it's the same situation everywhere. If the shop has any kind of traffic you are not going to jump to the front of the line because you have a GX, although I personally think that should be the rule. I can vouch for the quality of my GX mechanics though, which I can't for most dealerships. The problem is that mechanics, like sales staff, tend to move around a lot. I've been here 10 years and my GX mechanics have been here 3 yrs and 4 yrs respectively. Honda only rarely trains on the GX, both for sales and the mechanics, so once someone moves on it takes a long time to replace them. I would suggest that your focus should be on the quality of service rather than the speed of the turn around. I know being without a car for half a day is inconvenient, but it really doesn't matter what you drive, it takes time for them to handle the amount of service customers we see. That tends to hold true for any dealers shop. Stop in end say hi next time you're in and I'll buy you a cup of coffee and give you a ride if you need one.

        Re: Recall repair

When your near home you can just leave it at the dealer but taking it 50 or more miles away you really would like it taken care of quickly so at not to completely wipe out the whole day.

So if I could schedule late morning appointment a week in advance knowing that if the tech calls in sick I'll get a call before I leave and that the car will be a priority since I'm waiting then I'll drive 50 or more miles just to get to a good dealer with good techs.

It also helps if the dealer has a free WiFi connection to the Internet so one can pass the time.

            Re: Recall repair

A word to the wise: When you make your recall repair appointment with the Honda service center, make sure you CONFIRM with a service manager that the recall part is actually in stock. That way, your major inconvenience could become even more frustrating, like mine did today.

It was maddening to get a call from the Honda Service Center today at 2pm (I dropped my GX off at 7) telling me that they didn't have the part in stock. I made my appointment two days ago, and they knew it was for the recall repair. I think two days was ample time to figure out that the part was not in stock and 1) to special order it in time for my appointment, or barring that, 2) let me know so I could reschedule. It is inconvenient enough to get up early to take the car in, catch several buses to get to work, and several buses to get back to the service center, without the added joy of knowing it was all for nothing.

To top it all, there was no getting any apology out of the service guy, and so I had to settle for his promise that he would call me when the part comes in. I hope your experience is more pleasant!

Frankly, I'm not sure. I know that if the car is in under warranty repair and you have the HondaCare warranty extension, I believe a rental is supplied upon request. I would suggest calling the service dept that is going to handle your install and ask them to confirm this. (It's not really my dept and I don't want to give you wrong info) If they can, perhaps they can arrange it in advance so that the car is waiting for you when you arrive. We use Enterprise and they are right across the street, literally.

Re: 1998-2007 Civic GX Recall Information

Honda will be issuing the fire blanket on a Vin order only. This means that the dealer must have the vin# for your car to order the part for this recall. This will prevent the over production of this part.

Contact the dealership that does your service, or the dealer nearest you, and find out if they wish you to bring your car into the service dept, or if they will take your vin by phone and order the part for you.

Order the part and make your appointment to have it installed in a timely fashion or it will probably have to be sent back to the warehouse. Place your order and schedule your appointment for installation at the same time if possible.

The dealers just learned of the proceedure for this recall, so those of you that got the letter and tried to get this work done already... sorry for the inconvenience. All I can say is... please don't kill the messenger.

Yeah, I went to my local Honda Dealer (Penske, Ontario) they knew it was recall and told me no problem and it should be done in hour or so. So I was going to wait for the car, Then the service adv. told me said " Sorry we do not have the parts and we will not be getting them until sometime in March". Good thing I didn't make arrangements to rent or borrow a car. If anyone has had this service done please let me know how long it will take. If it is 1/2 day or longer Honda should give us a rental.

Another question: if you had a 3600 fill at station "A" and a 3000 fill at station "B" and station "B" is $1.00 cheaper per gallon but station "B" is 4 miles out of your way. Which station would you use? Thanks

                    Matt

Translation : Dealers don't make any real money on warranty and recall work , so unless you are also in for some customer pay work , please go somewhere else.

The parts take 2 business days at any so. cal dealer.

It takes quite a lot of extra electricity and equipment wear to get the extra # of pressure, and many would chose the 3000# for $1.00 less. Often, we pay full price and get 2800# out of the 3600 dispenser anyway. I would think $0.25 per gge would be a fair cost diff.

My experience at Walnut Creek Honda went smoothly-

I called for appointment, they ordered the part, it came in 2 days - this was back in January - scheduled the job for a Saturday, all went as planned. There was a little residual grime on the upholstery and some spray foam (like the gap filler stuff for weatherproofing) on the exterior and a little on the upholstery. Other than that, all went well - and I ran into 2 other GX owners while at the dealer and chatted with the sales guy - (they are selling these about as fast as they get them). One guy has two GX's, likes getting better prices on his home heating gas plus his NGV.

Here is the link to what happened to cause this recall. It wasnt in a garage but in a parking yard.

Can the blanket be installed at a non ngv honda dealer, or do you have to have the blanket installed at a ngv honda dealer?

This is not an over the counter part, like a key, or lic plate frame. Here at my dealership they were only ordering them by (and for) the GX's by vin #. I don't know that it's the same everywhere, but you could check around.
