  • Adding second tank to an '08 Civic GX

I'm in the process of adding an additional tank set up to my '08 Civic GX. I plan to do the work myself, though this is the first time I've undertaken this type of project. If anyone here has added a second tank to a Civic GX, I'd like to know where in the "fuel joint block" you tied the new tank line into. It seems there are a few choices:line from fueling nozzle or line to high pressure filter before manual shut off valve, and they would both work? Thanks for the help....A small sketch of the tie in or a picture would be awsome.

I would have taken this to a shop but the ones that are available are quoting $1500 for labor only while others that are less either don't return phone calls or schedule out 2 months. I have bought the tools I need for the stainless steel tubing (swagelock bender, cutter and de-burrer) and understand the tank set up has to be mounted very solidly (withstand 5G's?).

In reference to another thread...I understand supply and demand and the above is not a complaint, but simply a statement of facts. Instead of complaining and crying "price gouging" , which I don't think it is, I will simply do the work myself. I have a choice, and this is my choice. I'm glad at least some businesses are doing well, they deserve it for being in the CNG business!

    Thanks,

Where are you going to put the tank, and what size is it?
    Thanks

The extra tank set-up will be installed in the trunk, basically taking up the rest of the space and eliminating access to the spare tire. It's a dual tank set-up from a 2002 Crown vic that already has a very solid support holding the tanks together. I now have to attach this assembly to my car frame in two planes to ensure it's mounted solid enough.
Look back for a post in the market place by 02cvpi, it will have the pictures of the tanks, and the tanks in my trunk if you want to see what it looks like. I think the tanks are 4-5 GGE total.

Here's an Auxilliary tank install that was at the Cruise-In. Frankly, I'm so tired that I can't recall whose it was... sorry. He can chime in and provide details for you.

I can't. I need to get some feedback from Honda on this. I get asked this ocassionally. It may give the dealer the ability to claim "not covered" on the fuel system, but I can't see it effecting much more than altered parts. But I don't have to stand behind the warranty, Honda does. You could also try calling the Honda Customer Service line in Torrence. It is in the front of your owners manual.

              Curtis,

I'd want something in writing. Who do you think is my best bet to give me that and honor it? My ultimate motivation is to be able to get from Vegas to Phoenix.

If the tank installer will step in and warranty any factory parts Honda won't cover due to the mods + his own equipment... You'd be fine.

I'd like to do this too - thanks for the input Curtis. What affect would the additional tank have on refueling and the gas gauge? Would the Phil (say over a weekend) be able to fill both tanks without intervention? Also, would the fuel gauge be smart enough to measure fuel over both tanks? Safety (like in a crash) is also obviously a concern, though I am not sure who would be able to address that concern.

The Phill compress' .42 gge/hr. With a limited lifespan (approx 6000 hrs), you'd obviously wear it out faster. I'd recommend the FM-2, FM-4 or FMQ2-36 as a better fit for this application.

The fuel guage isn't very bright... but I think you'll find that it will see the pressure, regardless of source as pressure is shared between tanks.

Safety... hmmmm. Never heard of a problem. Anyone else ever heard of a safety issue with multiple tanks? Just have it done correctly, preferrably professionally.

I've heard the argument that a reduced crumple zone in the rear of the Civic GX could be an issue. Then I've also heard the opposite.

Anyway....so far no one has posted with any help regarding my first post on this topic...Come on! I'm sure there are some GX owners out there that have added a tank or two to extend their range. It would be great is one of you posted a short description and pictures of the tie in point between the new tank and the Civic CNG system as well as the tie-in to the wiring if the tank you added had an electric solenoid operated valve.

I'll do the same when I'm done with my project and maybe the next guy won't have to pay $1500 for half a day's worth of work.

I have done this on enough GX's that three of them have already gotten rear ended with the car wrapping itself around the tank, but everything was fine and the occupants were fine.

2002 CV tanks are 3000 psi, your GX is 3600 psi just keep that in mind.

Good to hear about the rear end collisions being a non-issue. The tanks are actually labeled as 3600 psi.

Would you mind sharing where your Civics had their extra tank tied into the GX CNG system?

In the last month I've seen 2 early GX's for sale with added tank in trunk. Is this a fairly common thing? How about in later GX's?
