I just purchased a 2002 Chevy Cavalier, It will start on gas when its cold and runs fine, after I shut it off it will not start again, the instrument cluster flashes and smells like gas, any ideas? could it be flooding? isn't an 02 fuel injected? I haven't tried running it on natural gas yet. Thanks in advance.

Re: 2002 Cavalier Startin Problem, Will not start Please Help
After reading your post, I assume you are referring to "gasoline" when you say it starts on "gas" as you later state you haven't tried running on CNG. So, do you have a gasoline smell when it doesn't start and the instrument cluster flashes? Does just the instrument cluster flash (and what part of it flashes) or do things like the headlamps, interior lights, etc. flash? Does the engine turn over OK, at normal cranking speed, or does it turn over slowly. How do you finally get it to start? There are a couple of things that could cause this but I need to pin some stuff down before I tell you were to start looking. BTW-the 2002 Cavalier is fuel injected on gasoline and uses a fumigation system on CNG.

So, do you have a gasoline smell when it doesn't start and the instrument cluster flashes? I think it only smells like gasoline after I have had it running and then tried to restart it.. Does just the instrument cluster flash (and what part of it flashes) or do things like the headlamps, interior lights, etc. flash? The whole intrument cluster fashes and I just noticed the headlamps also flash. Does the engine turn over OK, at normal cranking speed, or does it turn over slowly. Turns over normal. How do you finally get it to start? Ive only been able to get it to start after I let it rest for a while and when the engine is cold. And even still I feel than it only starts when Im lucky. I'm wondering if it may be a security issue. I have no prior history of the car since I bought it at the auction. also I purchased a 2001 cavalier that I have that runs fine. I have tried swaping some parts to try to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks again

Re: 2002 Cavalier Startin Problem, Will not start Please Help
Start by looking at the grounds in the electrical system. If you know the battery is good, check the condition of the ground cable. On the Cavalier, the cable goes from the battery to the engine block. In the middle of the cable is a tab the bolts to the battery tray. Take this connection apart, clean any corrosion off of it and re-install it. See if this has any effect on the problem. There are seveal grounds in the battery area, and all should be looked at. If you have a volt meter, put it on a low range (like 2 volts) and check to see if there is any voltage present between the engine block and the vehicle body when cranking the engine.
