  • Smell gas in 2001 Cavalier

I have a 2001 bi-fuel cavalier and when I am driving it I can smell natural gas in the car, especially when stopped in traffic. I'm pretty sure that it is under the hood. A friend of mine had a similar problem and I think he replaced the "low pressure regulator". I think he got directions and the part from Murphey at CNGmotors. I was just wondering how I could be sure where the problem was. I certainly don't want to replace something till I'm pretty sure where the problem is. I was also wondering where to buy parts. If I end up needing to replace something, where's the best place to go?

    Kirk,

I just replaced my Low Pressure Regulator for the same symptoms. If don't mind taking as good hit of that ugly smell, with the car Idling, take a good whiff right by the round screen looking thing on top of the LPR. I bet you will know immediately that's where it's coming from. I took mine apart and there was a small tear in the diaphragm. It is available from GMpartsdirect.com. The LPR Part Number is 52369142, the price is $290.54 from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

It took about a week or so to get, it comes with all the fittings installed.

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.

I have a 2001 cavalier and it also had a gas smell, it is the LPR and you can get a rebuild kit for it from IMPCO, they are the company that done the convertion for GM. You probably have the PEV regulator and the kit for it is about $75.00

you can go to this link to get technical info. http://www.teecoproducts.com/Catalog/P3.htm
then go to the PEV regulator and click on Technical Info.
      the kit should be RK-PEV-2

Thanks guys. That is really helpful. I wouldn't of had a clue where to buy or where to get technical info. I will look into it this weekend and let you know how it goes.

I called the number listed above, they will not deal with the individual. Accordiing to Impco's customer service rep, you will need to go through one of their distributors or dealers. Teeco is one of their distributors, and they won't talk to you unless you are part of the "gas industry"...they won't deal with the individual either. It sounds like the supply chain is pretty much locked up!

I'd sure like to have a rebuild kit available for my LPR as well.

If you are needing the regulator rebuild kits, we have them in inventory, as well as parts for most CNG/LPG systems. Give me a call and discuss, Kevin

Well, I decided to take the Low pressure regulator apart to see if I could see where the problem was. The truth is, I couldn't see any obvious problems, so I put it all back together nice and snug, and it seems to have really reduced or maybe even fixed the problem. I still smell a bit of gas when I start up the car, but the strong smell of gas when I am idling or at a stop light has disappeared. I am beginning to think that maybe some hoses or bolts had just worked loose and I inadvertently fixed it when I put everything back. I'm gonna keep my eye on it though... I have a feeling the problem will probably come back. Nobody is that lucky.

another spot the Cavaliers leak is the fuel fill valve not shutting all the way.
                  check that.
I've seen a couple on Cavaliers that ran on gasoline a lot.
