  • 99 Cavalier won't take a fill, fues OK, no check engine light

I have had Caprice bi-fuel cars with GFI system as well as Crown Vic dedicated CNG cop cars. Both of those have had manual shut-off valves.

I recently bought this Cavalier and it drives fine. It had a cut wire on the IAT (intake air temp sensor) harness and a check engine light from that. I fixed that problem, cleared codes and have driven it 50+ miles on gasoline with no codes or problems.

EXCEPT that I cannot fill it. I've tried two different Clean Energy pumps, 3600 and 3000 (pumps that I've seen fill other cars in front of me), I've tried disconnecting the battery (and reconnecting it and also tried leaving it disconnected), unplugging and reconnecting the wiring harnesses at the tank, nothing seems to allow me to fill the tank. It only puts in .002 GGE then stops.

The car's fuel gauge shows empty. I have been able to start it and drive it on CNG (no gasoline light on the switch) for only 100 yards, then switches to gasoline.

Yes, the CNG fuse is fine, yes, the light on the switch works, yes, the fuel gauge switches from gasoline to CNG. No, no check engine light or even pending code now.

I wonder if the govt shut off the tank because it couldn't run on CNG with the check engine light from the cut IAT wire? But how to turn the tank back on to accept a fill?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you getting power to the solenoid valve? If so ohm out the solenoid.

There is an allen wrench screw on the solenoid valve on the tank. Turn it clockwise to close the tank and counterclockwise to open the tank.

Thank you both for your help! The tank valve was simply closed, why I have no idea. I did not realize at first that the valve is in the tank on these, I'm used to larger cars with regular valves. Hopefully I won't have to learn about any other mechanical differences on this car!

        Thanks again!

So how has your experience been with the Cavalier compared to the other NGV vehicles you've had? I'm looking to buy NGV and they are half the price of the civics. Even though I'm a Honda fan, 5K is a lot of money.

          TIA
