The part of the latch that goes in the door is still available. However, the little pin that sticks out by the fill point (the striker) is not. I am goiing to try a cabinet magnet on the door and a metal striker glued to the body for the magnet to latch on to. I will post some pictures if I don't totally mess it up

I just went out to my Cavalier to see what these parts look like to see what could be used for a replacement and it looked really familiar to me. I came back inside and went to my furnace. That was it! The pins look exactly like the pins that hold the furnace door on, same shape and design. I didn't pull one out, but it may be an exact fit. Check your furnace and try one out. Let us know if it works.

The latching hardware on my 2001 cavalier is the same as the latch on many home clothes dryers. They are available for a few dollars at appliance repair stores or can be viewed online at appliance repair webstites. Some dryers have two latches for optional left or right swing door options. Check out your utility room and steal the one your not using.

Actually picked up an identical part at the appliance store. Thanks for you guys thinking of the clothes dryer option. The part I bought is a dryer door latch kit that includes both the latch and the striker. The newer stock that the store had included a metal striker. However, they found an older one in stock that still had the plastic striker. The appliance guy said either striker would fit. (you should try to find the old style striker otherwise when you go to a car show or try to sell your car through the Barrett-Jackson auction, the judges will deduct points for having the wrong part installed) Anyway, it's a Robertshaw/Uni-line division part with a part number of 83-021 66021. Fits Whirlpool dryers and includes instructions on how to take your dryer door apart to install. You would have thought that GM engineers would have at least used a latch off of a Frigidaire.

Thanks for all of the help. I couldn't find a plastic one, so I tried a metal one. Big mistake. I finally had to go online and get one off ebay. If you need here is where I got mine

              Pretty cheap, too.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I just love all the smart people on CNG chat. I bought some of these latches a while ago and they worked great. I needed some more, so I just had to find this thread again and I was set.

This is the best price I could find for the latch on ebay as of today.
