  • 2009 CNG Opel Zafira compact van maybe coming to US as Chevy

My first post, here goes. In 2009 GM will start producing a 7 passenger vehicle, codename Global Delta MPV7, in Detroit. In Europe this vehicle is already made and sold as the Opel Zafira, which has a CNG engine option, as well as turbodiesel and gasoline. They have already sold 50,000 CNG Zafiras in Germany and Italy. The new 2009 turbo-charged CNG powerplant gets 150 horses, up from its current 94 HP. The older models have been bi-fuel, with a small gasoline reservoir to provide about 300 miles of range total. Not bad for a vehicle that seats 7, or gives lots of space using fold-flat seats. Would be very popular here in Utah with the cheap CNG and larger families. We just need GM to sell some of these CNG engines in the US as Chevy or Saturn instead of only selling as Opels in Europe. I am thinking of a letter writing campaign to Bob Lutz, GMs Vice Chairman of Global Product Development, and another to Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak. Post if you are interested in helping get new CNG vehicles on the US market.

Here is the Zafira link and article:

Rüsselsheim. In 2009, Opel will introduce one new 1.6-liter turbo CNG engine (Compressed Natural Gas) with around 110 kW/150 hp and 210 Nm of torque. Developed by GM Powertrain in Turin, the new unit joins Opel’s current aspirated CNG engine, which has the same displacement and an output of 69 kW/94 hp. “Environmental awareness and driving fun are no longer mutually exclusive,” says Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer, GM Europe. “With this newly developed turbocharged CNG engine, we continue pursuing our strategy of turbocharging engines to increase efficiency – meaning lower consumption and emissions – without making any concessions in performance.”

Key features of the new CNG engine include a turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold, an intake manifold with gasoline and CNG fuel pipes, an oil cooler and piston cooling. By virtue of their propulsion units, natural gas-powered Opel vehicles produce 80 percent less nitrogen oxide than a diesel, and almost 20 percent less CO2 than a gasoline model (nearly 10 percent less CO2 than diesel). Furthermore, the exhaust gases contain almost no soot particles.

As a pioneer in natural gas vehicles, Opel broke new ground over seven years ago with the launch of the first Zafira CNG. With its monovalentplus concept, the car showcased the brand’s focus on excellent efficiency combined with unrestricted everyday suitability. Thanks to this concept, Opel became the first automaker to optimize an engine for both natural gas and gasoline operation.

Opel currently offers the Combo high-roof van and highly successful Zafira compact monocab with the 1.6 CNG aspirated engine. With CO2 emissions of just 138 g/km, the Opel Zafira CNG is the most environmentally friendly seven-seater available: in 2007/2008, it was named “Best Seven-seater” in the German Motor Club Environmental Car List – a title it has now held for five years in a row.

Opel is a leading German producer of natural gas-powered series production vehicles in Europe. A few days ago, the 50,000th CNG model left the OSV assembly lines in Rüsselsheim – seven years after production began in 2001. Last year also saw a new record with more than 12,000 Combo CNG and Zafira CNG models registered – a jump of 50 percent over the previous year. CNG vehicles continue to enjoy growing popularity, particularly in Germany and Italy."

I could see a saturn badge on that van, no problem! GM switches badges and ships it over here, selling a ton and reviving GM to what it use to be. Ahhhhhh, that would be great.

If the CNG only version shows up here I think my wife will buy in. Her main point against CNG vehicles is loss of trunk space.

I think GM should sell the Zafira in United States as in many other countries around the world. The Zafira is flexible enough to enter a new country outside europe.

See the Opel Zafira link(Stay flexible or Highlights/Versatility):

I hope you get a better message than this:
Unfortunately, Saturn has not made any plans or official announcements to produce the Saturn Zafira for sale in the United States.

But it should be the dedicated CNG version not the bi-fuel. Now, if they want to bring in both that's fine.

Although some of the information has already been covered there is some new info. The info came from here.

General Motors might build the next generation of the Opel Zafira in the US and export it to Europe.

"Exporting this model to Europe has not been ruled out," Klaus Franz, the head of Opel's workers’ council, said to Automotive News Europe’s sister publication Automobilwoche.

At the moment, GM plans to build a Chevrolet minivan that is only marginally different from the Zafira in Detroit beginning in the second quarter of 2009. There is also a Saturn model, based on the Zafira platform code-named Global Delta MPV7, in planning.

The continued weakness of the US dollar makes producing the Zafira in the US attractive.

"At the moment, it's still an unlikely scenario, but the pressure on the European factories is growing," Franz said.

The Zafira is currently produced in Bochum, Germany, and Gliwice, Poland. GM also exports a variation of the Opel Astra to the US for sale as a Saturn. needed to offer a fuel-efficient model in the US quickly despite the exchange rate.

If Chevy does the UNTHINKABLE . . . and produce a CNG vehicle here in USA but ONLY export it to foreign countries, I personally will rally NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT efforts to NOT buy a single Chevy product across the entire USA.

I will hope for the best right now, but am skeptical with likes of Big Oil "Son-Of-A-Bush" George in office as President of USA until January 2009!! USA better turn around for the better, or we educated people who know what CNG can do will REVOLT !!! CNG is definitely the ANSWER that USA needs now!!

cngacrossusa, why don't you rally all of your contacts to get GM to market it in the US? Be proactive and positive to help the CNG cause.

I needle the gm guys every time I get a chance, they never had a CNG vehicle that looked like the GX when Honda announced going retail.
They always marketed their CNG strictly to the municipal market.
I always kid them that their sales would have taken off if they had CNG vehicles that looked like the Honda GX when they introduced it at the Phoenix Clean Cities Convention.
They never marketed their CNG like they are doing with E85 either!
So the vehicle nor the fuel failed, GM failed in their marketing plain and simple, they did not have the vision to see it moving to the retail market like Honda did. Even Honda was not ready for the demand.

GM's dedication to alt fuels makes me wonder how long tell they say hydrogen will never work.

That's why there working on the volt. I think the volt is on the top of the list as far as alt fuel vehicles go. They should be beating the other auto makers to the punch so they can sell a ton. Just like when the Prius came out.

They have no intent on selling the Volt. They have even pushed it from Flexfuel/plug-in electric to hydrogen/plug-in electric, just to make it never happen and push it out another 3-10 years. I seriously doubt we will ever see the Volt on the road, it is just GM hype IMO.
